REGISTERS AND WILLS
Descendants of Richard James

Generation No. 1

        1.  Richard1 James was born in Glamorganshire, Wales1.

Notes for Richard James:
He was an Officer in the Expedition to Jamaica in 1655 with Penn and Venables. (Source: the Letters Patent for Arms granted to Mountague James)2

The expedition under Penn and Venables sailed from Portsmouth, England, in 1654. When it reached the West Indies Venables recruited additional men at Barbados and the Leeward Islands.  Richard James joined the expedition in Barbados.

In April 1655 Venables attacked Santo Domingo, the main goal, but he was badly beaten and lost many of his men. Not wishing to return home without some spoils, he attacked Jamaica on May 10th.  The Spanish did not put up much resistance, and the island was soon taken for Britain. In June Penn and Venables, though they had no authority to do so, took the fleet back to England leaving Major General Fortescue in command in Jamaica. For this Penn and Venables were imprisoned in the Tower in London.

According to Paget in his history of the James family:This first Richard James appears to have lived in Port Royal where his son, Richard, was born in 1655. There seems little doubt that he is the Richard James referred to in the will of Captain William James of Port Royal, which was written in 1678:-
"The last Will & Testament of Capt. William James. Item as far as my whole Estate I have or belongeth to me I make Richard James my true and lawful Executor of all what belongeth to me and what somever it is. I give the third to my wife Elizabeth James and to my daughter Elizabeth one third of the (blank in the original) and another third to my Cozen Richard James his son William ye younger and Godson: also for my Boate I ordaine....it shall not he disposed of noe way what so ever wth out ye consent of Richard James my true and lawful Executor of' my whole Estate and what land I have Patented. I freely give to ye said Richard James my kindman (sic) likewise all other land I have ordered to be run out likewise my two gunnes I give to Richard James the above said. I also give to my good daughter one mare colt. This being all I have to say I sett my hand and seale ye day and yeare above written.
"Likewise I give to my Cosen Richard James all my waring clothes and apparrell.
WILLIAM JAMES."
The land patented by Captain William James was situated on the Cabaritta river in that part of the old parish of St. Elizabeth which is now included in the parish of Westmoreland, and it is shown on a map of Jamaica dated 1675.

        3.  Col. Richard2 James (Richard1)5 was born Bet. 1655 - 1656, and died July 1759.  He married (1) Ann Haughton6, daughter of Richard Haughton.    He married (2) Mary Partridge7, daughter of Thomas Partridge.  She died May 1756.

Notes for Col. Richard James:
He was the first male child to be born to the settlers after the Conquest of Jamaica.  According to Paget's history of the James family, Richard James was the first child born of English parents in Jamaica.  On the other hand Feurtado, writing in 1896, states Richard's sister Mary was the first child born to the settlers.

In 1692 he was granted 400 acres of land near Cabaritta Bay in St. Elizabeth (the part that became Westmoreland in 1703).  In 1711, having acquired other land in Westmoreland and Hanover, he gave this original portion of land to his brother William.  He finally settled at Davis Cove in Hanover in 1734.

He was Colonel in the Militia, and Custos for the parishes of St. Elizabeth, Westmoreland and Hanover.

He lived to be 103 years old.

WILL OF RICHARD JAMES

[This is a synopsis. For the full text of the Will, please see JamesRichardWills]

In his will, in which he describes himself as Richard James the elder of the Parish of Hanover in the Island of Jamaica Planter being "sick and weak in body but of perfect mind."  He charges with all his debts "all that my moiety or half a plantation or sugar work situate near Davis's Cove in the Parish aforesaid ....and also all my moiety of the negroe or other slaves etc. thereunto belonging. Item I give unto my grandson William Rhodes James the sum of two hundred pounds. Item I give and bequeath unto my grandson Thomas James £200. Item I give unto my grandson Haughton James the son of my own son Haughton James the sum of £50. All the rest of my Estate I give and bequeath to my son Montague James whom I hereby nominate the Executor. In case of the death of my said son Montague James my will is that Samuel Torrent James, Montague James, William Haughton James, and Richard James, the sons of my son Montague James become heirs to my Estate."

The Daily Gleaner 25th January 1967 - article on the James family by Dorothy Southby:

"First child to be born to settlers after the Conquest of Jamaica, lived for 103 years...It is said that in his latter years the lived almost entirely on cocoa.
It is on record that in 1692 Richard James, the son, was granted 400 acres of land near Cabaritta Bay in St Elizabeth, (that part which became Westmoreland in 1703.) As the years went by he bought more and more land in St Elizabeth, Westmoreland and Hanover, finally settling in Hanover, at Davis Cove, in 1734. Many of the James family are buried there. Richard must have become very wealthy, for in 1711 he gave his original grant of land to his brother, William, for "the love and affection I do bear him". The affection was further cemented in the next generation when Richard's daughter Ann, married William's son, William Rhodes James."

The Land described in a Platt:

Noted in the will of Richard Haughton of St Elizabeth, his father in law, in 1694. Anne appears to be the only child and heir of estate in St Elizabeth after the death of her mother, Rebecca. There are no indications that they have children in the will.

To the above written last Will and Testament I have thought proper to annex the following Codicil which my meaning and intention is shall be of equal validity and force with the above will or anything therein contained and I do hereby nominate constitute and appoint my very worthy and much esteemed friends Andrew Arcedeckne and William Beckford Esquires joint executors of my said last will with my said loving wife above named and joint guardians of the body and estate of my said son Haughton James until he shall arrive at the age of 21 years and of my said daughter Elizabeth Ann James until she shall arrive at the age of 18 years or date of marriage and my will and intention further is that my said loving wife shall possess and enjoy the dwelling house wherein I know live which I purchased since the date of my Will aforesaid during the term of her natural life she atending to and making good all repairs of the same.  And I do also hereby give and bequeath unto my loving sister in law Mrs. Maximillia Emily four hundred pounds current money of this Island to be paid to her out of my said estate within six years after my decease.  In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 27th day of October 1740.

Memd.  The 13th day of November 1740 personally came and appeared before me Calvin Galpino Clerk Rector of the parish of St. Catherine and made oath upon the Holy Evangelist that going to visit Haughton James late of the parish of St. Catherine aforesaid Esquire deceased the 17th day of October last being the day of the date of the Codicil hereunto annexed he found the said Haughton James very weak and low in body but of sound understanding and in his perfect senses and being requested by the said Haughton James to sit down by him on his bedside he accordingly did so and was thereupon entertained by the said Haughton James with a great deal of very rational excellent and edifying discourse concerning the vanity of the world the reasonableness and justice as well as duty and obligation of a perfect resignation of ourselves to the will of God and concerning the great excellent and usefulness of the principles of religion which as he observed was the only thing that could afford a man comfort and satisfaction in a time of sickness and under the prospect and apprehensions of death he said he found himself very weak and ill but hoped by the blessing of God he might recover however he trusted that if it should please God to take him out of the world he would receive him to his future mercies and being put in mind by the said Calvin Galpino of the infinite goodness and mercy of Almighty God and his readiness to forgive us our offenses for the sake of our blessed Savior's merits the said Haughton James replied Ay that was our sole refuge that was all we had to trust to or to that effect the said Haughton James seemed a good deal indifferent as to life but said it was a matter of great tenderness and ___ to leave a young family and affairs perhaps not in so good a posture as a man would wish however he said he cheerfully committed his family to the protection and providence of the Divine being and did not in the least distrust his care and goodness or to that purpose the said Haughton James desired to be remembered to Andrew Arcedeckne of the parish of St. Catherine aforesaid Esquire and said he had been always his good friend and had promised in case of his death to be a friend to his family and that he very much depended upon his favour and goodness which he desired the said Calvin Galpino to tell the said Andrew Arcedeckne and the said Calvin Galpino asking the said Haughton James if he had made his Will and telling him at the same time that he had not appointed William Beckford of the parish of St. Catherine aforesaid Esqr. one of his executors said Calvin Galpino and others that were his friends believed it would be advisable for the said Haughton James to make a Codicil to his will for that purpose as the said William Beckford was his particular friend and a gentleman that would have it very much in his power to protect and serve the said Haughton James's family whereupon the said Haughton James made a answer by all means the said William Beckford is a very proper person it was what the said Haughton James had been thinking of and the said Haughton James further added how happy a thing it was for a man to have a friend to put him in mind of what was for his good or words to that like effect upon which he said Haughton James requested and desired the favor of the said Calvin Galpino to prepare and draw a Codicil to be deemed and taken as part and parcel of his last Will and Testament and directed the said Calvin Galpino to insert in the said Codicil the names of the said Andrew Arcedeckne and William Beckford executors of his said will and guardians of his children jointly with his wife as pertaining the other matters contained in his said Codicil the said Calvin Galpino received express orders and directions from the said Haughton James's own mouth for inserting them in the said Codicil and the said Calvin Galpino did accordingly at the desire of the said Haughton James prepare and draw up the writing or instrument hereto annexed purporting to be a Codicil to his said Will and to be deemed and taken as a part and parcel thereof and that the same is vastly conformable in every particular to the instructions and directions which the said Calvin Galpino received from the said Haughton James and that after the said Calvin Galpino had prepared and drawn up the said writing or instrument hereto annexed purporting to be a codicil to the said will and to be deemed and taken as part and parcel thereof he went to the said Haughton James and sat down by him on the bedside and read the said writing or instrument hereto annexed purporting to be a Codicil to the said Will to the said Haughton James distinctly and audibly and in the very words that the Codicil now appears the wife of the said Haughton James sitting at the same time in an easy chair near the said bed to whom the said Calvin Galpino had before given a copy of the said Codicil and upon the said Calvin Galpino reading the said writing or instrument hereto annexed purporting to be a Codicil to the said Will to the said Haughton James and asking him if he approved thereof the said Haughton James declared he did and said it was vastly agreeable to his meaning and intention and pursuant to his instructions and directions he had given the said Calvin Galpino his wife still sitting by him as aforesaid and soon after the said Haughton James desired his wife to leave the room which she accordingly did and then the said Haughton James and the said Calvin Galpino had a good deal of private discourse during which time the said Haughton James displayed not only the soundness of his understanding and judgment but also his earnest inclination and desire to do justice to every body that had any dependence upon him and upon the said Calvin Galpino's telling the said Haughton James that he would carry home the said writing or instrument hereto annexed purporting to be a codicil to the said will and get it writ over again fair in order to its being signed by the said Haughton James the said Haughton desired he would so do and beg'd the said Calvin Galpino that he would procure it to be done that afternoon for fear of accidents as he expressed himself and the said Calvin Galpino did accordingly carry home the said writing or instrument purporting to be a codicil to the said will with him and made another and fairer copy threreof and that toward the evening of the same day he returned to the house of the said Haughton James with the said copy in his pocket but being told it was necessary he should not be disturbed but endeavor to compose himself and get some rest the said Calvin Galpino did not think it fit to trouble him with the said writing or instrument purporting to be a Codicil to the said Will at that time and from then to the time of his death which happened the Sunday following the said Calvin Galpino did not find a convenient opportunity to present the said writing to the said Haughton James in order to its being signed and the said Calvin Galpino saith that the said writing is the same individual writing or instrument the words of which the said Calvin Galpino took from the said Haughton James's own mouth and which he afterwards read over to him distinctly and audibly and word for word as it is therein written and that the said Haughton James did thereupon declare to the said Calvin Galpino his liking and approbation thereof and said it was in all respects agreeable to his meaning and intention and the said Calvin Galpino further saith that he knows nothing of any other Will or Codicil since made by the said Haughton James which may tend to the disadvantage of the said Will and Codicil hereunto annexed

A letter from the College of Arms, Queen Victoria Street, E.C., Dec. 24. 1915, states the following concerning Armorial Bearings:

By letters Patent dated 29 June 1772 they were granted and exemplified to "Montague James of the parish of Hanover Co. Cornwall in the Island of Jamaica one of the Brigadiers General of the Island son of Richard James of the same place Esquire by Mary his wife daughter of Thomas Partridge and grandson of --- James whose father descended out of Glamorganshire and was an officer in the Expedition and at the reduction of Jamaica by Penn and Venables anno 1655."  The Grant recites as follows "that the Armorial bearings used by him (the said Montague James) his ancestors as appear on seals plate monuments etc were 'azure on a chevron between 3 lions passant guardant as many escallops', and  the Crest  'a demi lion rampant in the paws an escallop' but not being able on account of the early migration of his ancestors and the constant residence of his family in Jamaica for more than a century to ascertain his connection with any of the numerous families recorded in the College of Arms and unwilling to bear any Ensign of Honour without legal authority - - -"  he therefore requested that a Grant might be made to him of the said Arms.  The Arms and Crest as you have described them were therefore granted, to be borne by the said Montague James and his descendants and by the other descendants of his father Richard James and also by the descendants of his uncle William James.
We have a pedigree of the family entered in 1823 commencing with Richard James (the father) and showing that Montague James had an only surviving son John Haughton James who was then living and that his sons were (1) Philip Haughton James of Breganston Square (born 1795) (2) John Haughton James. (3) Thomas Reid James, Lt. East India Co's Service and (4) Haughton James also a Lt. in the E.I.C.S.

In his will he left to his wife, Mary, "all my Plate Jewels Houses Furniture Linen Carriages and Carriage Horses also the sum of £1,000 of lawful money of Great Britain" and "Whereas my late Father-in-Law Philip Haughton Esq. deceased bequeathed unto my three daughters Catherine Haughton James now Catherine Haughton Jackson the wife of Edmund Jackson merchant, Mary Haughton James and Elizabeth Haughton James the sum of £2,000", he makes special provision for his daughter Sarah Haughton James by giving her "my plantations Hogg River, Green Island and Haughton Tower plantations." To his son John Haughton James he leaves "my Plantation and Sugar  Work called Spring Plantation", Montague Hall and "land adjoining to the last which I purchased of William Rhodes James and Thomas James" and "my Pen called Burnt Ground." He leaves "Lands at Davis's Cove, also purchased by me of the said William Rhodes James and Thomas James", also a parcel of land at Negril in Westmoreland to "my son Samuel Torrent James for his natural life." "And from and immediately after the determination of the Estate by forfeiture or otherwise in the lifetime of my said son Samuel Torrent James" he devises that the estate shall go "to the use of William Rhodes James of the psh. of Trelawny Esq. and John Robert James of the parish of Hanover, Esq."

Notes for William Haughton James:
The title on the page in the Hanover Parish Register is "Baptisms in Hanover 1773, 1774," and there are no dates of baptisms for the individuals listed.  That section of the page may have been torn or damaged before 1826, when the Register was recopied.  This baptism is on the line following that of the baptisms of Thomas's children, who were born in 1772 and 1774 and baptized at the same time. The date of birth given for William was 1774, which evidently was a clerical error, and it has been changed here to 1773.

William's parents were resident in the parish of St. James in 1774.
