Notes for William Pitter:
In 'Caveats Entered', reported in the Royal Gazette, there is one entered by William Pitter on the estate of Thomas Morgan on August 8, 1793. ['Thomas' may have been a misreading of the name 'James' by the transcriber.  The Gazette was in very poor condition.]

William Pitter appears in several Jamaica Almanacs as follows:

1796 Almanac: Assistant Judge of the Court of Common Pleas in Trelawny and of the Quorum in 1795 [no legal training required].
1802 Almanac: Clerk of the St. Elizabeth Vestry in 1801.  Captain in the St. Elizabeth Regiment of Militia of Foot in 1801.
1808 Almanac: Lt. Col. of St. Elizabeth Regiment of Militia of Foot since 23rd [month blank, may be June], 1807.
1808 Almanac: Clerk of the St. Elizabeth Vestry, 1807.
1811 Almanac: Owner of a property in the Parish of Vere with 50 slaves, in 1st quarter of 1810.
1815 Almanac: Owner of Abingdon in Vere with 47 slaves and 25 stock, in the 1st quarter of 1814.
[In 1814 the parish of Manchester was created from parts of Vere, Clarendon, and St. Elizabeth.  Abingdon then became a part of south-western Manchester, just east of Watson's Hill.  Prior to 1734 this area had been in St. Elizabeth, but was added to Vere in 1734.  There were other adjustments to the border in the intervening years.  This means that it may be possible that William Pitter lived at Abingdon from 1802, but it was first in St. Elizabeth, then in Vere, and finally in Manchester.]
1818 Almanac: Owner of Abingdon, Manchester, with 53 slaves and 32 stock, as of 1st qtr. 1817.

William Pitter and Abingdon are not listed in the 1820 or 1821 Almanacs.  The 1819 Almanac does not contain any listing of proprietors and properties.

Apparently, some time between the first quarter of 1817, and the first quarter of 1821, William Pitter either died or left Jamaica with his wife and son John Rhodes Pitter, leaving his son Thomas in possession of the Abingdon property.  There is no record of his death in the Parish Registers for Manchester, St. Elizabeth or Vere.

Notes for Thomas Pitter:
Thomas Pitter appears in the Jamaica Almanacs as a property owner as set out below.  The Almanacs always reflected the ownerships that existed in the first quarter of the prior year:

1820: Owner of property in Manchester  with 57 slaves and 23 stock [no name of property stated]
1821: No listing for any Pitters, or for any of his properties
1822: Owner of Sherwood Forest, Manchester, 56 slaves and 21 stock
1822: Owner of Abingdon, Manchester with 36 slaves and no stock
1824: Owner of Abingdon, Manchester, 91 slaves and 11 stock
1828: Owner of Sherwood Forest, 55 slaves and 13 stock
1833: Owner of Sherwood Forest, Manchester, 56 slaves and no stock;
and owner of Mount Oliphant, Manchester, 62 slaves and no stock.

[Sherwood Forest is in south-eastern Manchester, to the northwest of Windsor Forest, with only one other property between them.]

[In 1824 Mount Oliphant had belonged to the heirs of John Kennedy. Thomas Pitter died in 1833, and by 1838 Sherwood Forest belonged to Anthony Davis, and Mount Oliphant belonged to Thomas Sweetland.]

Thomas Pitter also appears in the Almanac as follows:

1819 Almanac: Ensign in Manchester Regiment of Foot Militia since August 21, 1816.
1821 Almanac: Lieutenant in Manchester Regiment of Foot Militia, since November 4, 1819.

(In October, 1834, a Charles Pitter and his wife Eliza were living at Sherwood Forest when they had a son named Charles James Pitter baptized.  It is not certain that this is the Charles J. Pitter Esq. who was Clerk of the Manchester Vestry from 1818 to 1823, and poundkeeper in 1818.  They may have taken up residence at Sherwood Forest when Thomas died.  No proof of relationship to Thomas Pitter has been found.)

Notes for William Augustus Dickson:
He was a nephew of the John Dickson who had come to Jamaica from Scotland about 1750, married Ann Crooks and was a correspondent of Duncan Campbell. [Refer also to Decreet, 1778, Dickson v Dickson].

W A Dickson's father, William, John's younger brother, was a brewer, distiller and innkeeper in Lasswade, near Edinburgh. The inn and brewery belonged to John who had other tenanted property in the parish which William also managed for him. Some of these were gradually sold off, but three houses were retained (WAD's will refers to property in Scotland).

W. A . Dickson arrived in Jamaica bef. 1807 to join his cousin, Richard Dickson, merchant at Lucea and Davis' Cove, John Dickson's son, and inherited Cousins Cove from him in 1821.

In the 1823 Census of Hanover he was listed as aged 36, white, residence Davis Cove.

By 1859, Augustus Murray Dickson was his only surviving son in Jamaica, and he sold the remaining houses in which he had inherited a share to a cousin, Robert Muir, a banker, then living in Shrewsbury, England.

From the National Archives of Scotland, (RS27/2209 f. 164):
1859, 28 December, presented in behalf of Robert Muir, Banker, Shrewsbury.  Augustus Murray Dickson was the only surviving son and heir of William Augustus Dickson, merchant in Jamaica in the properties (1, 2 and 3) and he had afterwards disponed them to Adolphe Philipson Esq, official assignee for the County of Cornwall, Jamaica, along with Mary Julia Dickson or Foster, wife of Richard Loda Foster, Collector of Customs, Montego Bay, Jamaica and Robina Anne Dickson, residing in Montego Bay, sisters of Augustus Murray Dickson for all right and title they had to the properties dated 26 January 1855 and 7 April 1857.

The interesting thing about this particular record in Scotland is that W.A. Dickson mentioned no daughter named Robina Ann Dickson in his will, written 1839, and made no alterations between then and his death in 1842. The names of his wife and his four other children were included in his Will. See Will of W. A. Dickson.
