Notes for Joseph Whittaker:
He named his property in St. Ann, Jamaica "York," which would indicate that he was probably born in York.  The name first appears in the 1822 Almanac.  Dates of birth for a Joseph Whittaker, with a brother John were found on familysearch.org. The original microfilms have not been examined.

In 1806 Joseph's name appeared on a long list of debtors on the Inventory of Thomas Cooper, late coppersmith of Trelawny.

It seems that some time between 1806 and 1817 Joseph moved from Trelawny to St. Ann. The subsequent Almanacs and Slave Returns all reported him in St. Ann.

Joseph signed a Slave Return for St. Ann in 1817, declaring that he had 12 slaves.  There were 2 African males (James and Virgil), and 3 creole (John, Tom and James).  There were 2 African females (Jenny and Mary Ann) and 5 creoles (Sophy, Bessy, Mary, Nancy and Kitty).

On the 1820 Almanac (March 1819 data) he had 13 slaves and 3 stock.
On the 1821 Almanac (March 1820 data) he had 13 slaves and 4 stock

On his 1820 Slave Return he declared the births of 2 male slaves, Bob and William, making a total of 14 slaves as of June 1820.

On the 1822 Almanac (March 1821 data) he had 13 slaves and 4 stock on his property, York.

Joseph died before March 1822, and John took over the filing of the Slave Returns.

                                                            ---------------
The 1823 Almanac (reporting March 1822) Joseph Whittaker deceased, York, 15 slaves 3 stock.

John Whittaker filed an 1823 Slave Return as Executor of Joseph Whittaker.  On it he added the birth of 3 male slaves (George, Edward and William) and 2 female slaves (Venus and Sudan), for a total of 17 slaves.

The 1824 Almanac (reporting March 1823) Joseph Whittaker deceased, York, 17 slaves.
The 1825 Almanac (reporting March 1824) Joseph Whittaker deceased, York, 15 slaves.
The 1826 Almanac (reporting March 1825) estate of Joseph Whittaker, York, 16 slaves.

John Whittaker filed an 1826 Slave Return as Executor of Joseph Whittaker. One slave, John, had been sold by Deputy Marshall's sale. Two had died (Virgil and Venus). One had been born (Chance).  Another had been born and died in the 3 year period. The total was then 14.

The 1827 Almanac (reporting March 1826) estate of Joseph Whittaker, York, 14 slaves and 7 stock.
The 1828 Almanac (reporting March 1827) estate of Joseph Whittaker, York, 15 slaves.
The 1829 Almanac (reporting March 1828) estate of Joseph Whittaker, York, 12 slaves.

John Whittaker filed an 1829 Slave Return as Executor of Joseph Whittaker. Five slaves had been sold by Deputy Marshall's sale. Four had been born, but one of them had already died. The total was then 12.

The 1832 Almanac (reporting March 1831) estate of Joseph Whittaker, York, 24 slaves (this had been doubled for not filing Tax Return).
The 1833 Almanac (reporting March 1832) estate of Joseph Whittaker, York, 24 slaves (this had been doubled for not filing Tax Return).

        3.  John2 Whittaker (John1) was born Bet. 1759 - 1766 in Leeds, York, England.  He met Mary Graves Bef. March 1789.

Notes for John Whittaker:
John appears several times in the 18th century Almanacs, and other journals.

In the Almanacs for 1787 and 1790 (reporting 1786 and 1789) he was the Captain of the Martha Brae Fort (promoted to First Captain by 1789).

According to the "Cornwall Chronicle" for March 1789 he was a churchwarden for Trelawny. The "Royal Gazette" for March 1793 also lists him as a churchwarden in Trelawny.

In the Almanacs for 1790 through 1799 (reporting 1789 to 1798) he was an Assistant Judge of the Common Pleas and of the Quorum. This is also mentioned in the "History of Trelawny" for 1796.

The 1796 Almanacs lists him for 1795 as one of the 'Commissioners appointed for the more comfortable subsistence of the Regulars and Militia during Martial Law.'

On August 15, 1796, he was present at a meeting held in Martha Brae concerning the Harbour (per "History of Trelawny."
                                                          ______________

In 1820 he filed a Slave Return in Trelawny for 1 slave, Catella, a 37 year-old African Negro transferred from St. Ann. His return was copied into the Slave Register, which indicates that he signed by X (which does not correspond to his signature on later Returns).

It seems that after the death of Joseph, John moved to St. Ann, most likely to live at York.

On his 1823 Slave Return he had moved Catella back to St. Ann, and added 2 African slaves who had been bequeathed to him by Richard James Dunn of Trelawny (Affeia and Venus).
He filed an 1823 Slave Return as Executor of Joseph Whittaker.  On it he added the birth of 3 male slaves (George, Edward and William) and 2 female slaves (Venus and Sudan).

For 1823, 1826, and 1829 he filed Slave Returns as Executor for Joseph Whittaker.

                                                          ______________

In the 1829 Almanac John was listed as the Administrator for Samuel Barton with 2 slaves.
In the 1831 Almanac John was listed as the Administrator for Samuel Barton with 4 slaves (the number had been assessed).
In the 1832 Almanac John was listed as the Administrator for Barton with 2 slaves.

Notes for John Whittaker:
His father John Whittaker was a white Englishman, and his mother Mary Graves was a free mustee--that made him a mesteefina, and automatically white by law.

More About John Whittaker:
Baptism: April 06, 1790, Trelawny9
Race/nationality/color: free colored (according to parish register)

Notes for Elizabeth Ann Barton:
Her baptismal record states  she was "of colour."  I have a copy of the certificate for her marriage to "Henry Flavion Leon" (her second marriage).  Her death certificate says she was 63 years old.  Note that she was not quite 16 when she married the first time, to John Whittaker.  She was 31 years old when she married the second time, to Henry Lions, who was only 20 years old.  Her age at death, and the name of her daughter living in her house, both corroborate her identity.  In the Jamaican records her name was sometimes "Anne", and sometimes "Ann Elizabeth" as well as "Elizabeth Ann".

Generation No. 4

        11.  Rebecca Ann4 Whittaker (John3, John2, John1) was born Bef. October 07, 1827, and died August 1869.  She married (1) John Henry Lewis Bignall December 06, 1849 in Trelawny15, son of Henry Bignall and Mary Pryce.  He was born Bet. 1825 - 1826, and died April 1852 in Trelawny.  She married (2) Arthur Goddard June 26, 1862 in Falmouth, Trelawny16, son of Reynold Goddard and Jane Quartley.  He was born June 05, 1837 in the City of London, England17,18.

Notes for Rebecca Ann Whittaker:
I have a copy of her death certificate in the name of Rebecca Ann Goddard (which had been obtained by her half-sister Lionette Lions).  It lists her age as 39 years, but she was in fact at least 41 years old.  She was buried by Isaac Naylor.

Notes for John Henry Lewis Bignall:
He was christened 4 weeks after his father's burial.  His name on the baptism record was John Henry Bignall.  On his burial record, it was John Henry Lewis Bignall.

His father evidently left money for him to be educated.  His occupation in 1849 was "clerk" and in 1852 it was "accountant". At some time before 1849 he moved from Portland to Trelawny.  It is quite possible that he had a job in the Customs Department or some other type of Civil Service, in which he held the position of Clerk.  Persons in the Service were often moved from one office to another in the island.
