Written by Fr. Damian -
In 1939 when I first came to Saint Leo Abbey desiring to give my life to God, I encountered a group of men who were by the standards of the day materially poor and poor in spirit as well. Their material poverty was due in part to the fact that not only was the source of revenue derived from educating a small number of students, and from stipends from missionary work meager, but because the Abbey was saddled with paying off a large debt on the new Saint Edward Hall, built to house the Prep School students. In those days the Abbey carried no health insurance. The monks by necessity were obliged to trust that God would provide for all medical needs which he did. In 1942 I had to undergo surgery at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa. Both the surgeon and the hospital donated their services. In grateful appreciation the Abbey sent each a couple crates of our home grown navel oranges! As a monastery we were of necessity largely self sustained. Very seldom was there need to leave the monastic property, except for occasional visits to the doctor and dentist. Our Abbey Procurator stocked an assortment of articles of clothing in three sizes only: large, medium, and small in limited quantities, and assortment -of the basic toilet articles. I recall one occasion when I requested a new pair of shoes, only to be told to re-apply in a month, as my size was not in stock. Our prayer life and our individual contribution to the common life served to unite us into a closely knit and caring community of monks having a deep appreciation and regard for one another. Brothers Leo and Aloysius were the Abbey butchers, and Brother George rose daily at four o'clock A.M. to milk and feed the cows. Brother Christopher assisted Brother Paul with the vegetable garden when he was not busy working in his machine shop. Brother Leo ran the farm and planted and tended our citrus groves which provided a regular source of income and helped to build our Abbey Church by our exchanging oranges for cut sandstone from the quarry of St. Meinrad's Abbey in Indiana. Brother Placid with Brother John baked bread and did the cooking when they were not in the carpenter shop making and repairing furniture. Each year in preparation for Palm Sunday, we would gather our own palm fronds from the bud of the native sabal palms that grew in the woods surrounding the monastery. Unable to afford purchasing flowers to decorate the Altar of Repose and the main altar at Easter, we would gather bunches of the varieties of phlox that covered the road sides and fields. Sixty years ago monastic life here at the Abbey was largely self-contained, simple and closely bonded together. There seemed to be less clutter in our lives and more leisure time to stop and smell the roses, to reflect, and appreciate one another. There were no TVs, stereos, VCR's or computers to distract and entrap one, allowing less time to concern our hearts with the things of God. As one ponders on bygone years, remembering only its positive aspects and allowing the negative ones to fade away into oblivion, one feels a yearning for the return to the "good old days." But one must not look mournfully into the past; it cannot return. One must wisely improve the present, for it's all we have; and go forth to I meet the shadowy and uncertain future without fear, trusting in God's unfailing love and providential care, while striving continually that in all things God is glorified!

In 1939, the monks had already built a grotto out of native coral rock in a shady grove at the edge of the woods and dedicated it to Our Lady of Lourdes. Often on their afternoon walks, the students would stop at the grotto to offer a prayer and visit with old brother Aloysius, the gardener and grotto keeper, hoping to find him over an open fire cooking some of his freshly gathered wild mushrooms, yearning to be offered a taste of his cooking. Coming to the states from Bavaria, Brother had brought with him not only the knowledge to distinguish edible from poisonous species of mushrooms, but also the skill of making wine. When in season, Brother would gather the wild muscadine grapes, elderberries, raspberries, and the small fruit of the Butea Palms that grew around the monastery. He produced an on going, but limited supply of tasty wine for monastic consumption on the principal Feast days and Holidays. I have no doubt that he shared his knowledge of wine making with a few of his young listeners because of a discovery I was to make one day while collecting plants for my thesis on the plant communities of Pasco County. I had entered a small clearing in the woods surrounded by Sweet Gum and Live Oak trees, when I inadvertently stepped on what proved to be rusted sheets of metal roofing that had been carefully covered with layers of dead leaves and rotting branches to conceal them from view. Curiosity got the better of me. On removing the rusted metal sheets, I discovered that a large pit had been dug, measuring about five feet deep and six feet wide on the sides of which crude shelves had been propped up bearing rows of bottles of various shapes and sizes, all containing a clear amber colored liquid. I uncorked a bottle, smelled the contents and bravely took a sip of the golden liquid which proved to be the most delicious orange wine that I had ever tasted. It then dawned on me at once, this was why the same four students had for weeks on end, wandered off together into the deep woods after classes were over, on a path that led directly to the hidden winery. Of these, now grown men, one passed away a year ago, his brother frequently visits me. The other two, their adventurous spirit still alive, will I hope, show up at one of the class reunions to re-live and share with their former class mates at a time for remembering their experiences and adventures of the past: their walks in the woods and the joys and pleasures derived from contemplating nature and God, who reveals his loving presence in the wonders of creation, the beauty of the sunset, the song of birds and the quiet voices of the silent woods.
Father Raphael was one of the great if not the greatest headmasters the Prep School ever had. He held this position from 1944 to 1954. I was privileged to work under him as prefect and teacher for those ten years and attribute my success as a teacher to his able direction and guidance.

DR. BRANDAY GIVEN SEND-OFF
A farewell function was held at the T.B. Hospital on Thursday Feb. 13, in honour of Dr. W.J. Branday and Mrs. Branday who will be leaving the island for Trinidad, where the doctor will take up his appointment as Chief T.B. Officer and Superintendent of the new Sanatorium there.
Dr. Branday has been for several years Medical Office-in-charge of the Slipe Pen Road T.B. Hospital.
In their address to Dr. Branday, patients at the hospital expressed gratitude for all that he had done for them and for the zeal he displayed in his work in "helping to allay the sufferings of unfortunate humanity".  They wished him "luck, health and strength and above all God's blessing" to carry on his work elsewhere.
In reply, Dr. Branday said:  "I thank you all for the things you have said about me and for the address you have given me.  It has always been a great pleasure to work in this hospital, and, therefore, the work was not as difficult or troublesome as some people thought.  You tell me that you will miss me when I am gone but I will always miss you too.  We are going to a place we don't know, we are leaving people we do know, and we shall miss you very great."
"It may be many years before I am able to return, and I hope that when I do return I may find you all still here, not as you are, but in a much healthier condition. ............ On behalf of my wife and myself I think you all for the things you have said and done, and for your good wishes".

The KING has been pleased to approve of:
Mr. Percival Arthur George, as Consul of the Dominion Republic at Kingston, Jamaica

The Daily Gleaner, Kingston, Jamaica - Wednesday, March 27, 1946:
DEATH OF MR. P.A. GEORGE
Noted Businessman, He was Chairman of Shipping Association.
One of the better known businessmen of Jamaica died yesterday, when Mr. Percival Arthur George, partner in the firm of George and Branday, produce merchants and steamship agents, passed on in St. Andrew after three months' illness.
Mr. George, who was chairman of the Shipping Association of Jamaica among other interests, returned to the island in the middle of December, last year, from a business trip to the United States and Canada, and became ill shortly afterwards.
Confined to hospital continuously since the beginning of this year, he recently showed signs of progress, but in the last few days his strength started to fail, and he died at noon yesterday. He was in his fiftieth year.
Youngest son of the late Arthur George and his wife, Mrs. Rose Emily George, and grandson of the late L.P. Branday, Mr. Percy George was born in July 1896.  Of a Roman Catholic stock, he was educated at St. George's and had a worthy scholastic c???
Leaving school, he entered the business of George and Branday, with his late father and his elder brother, Mr. Vincent George, J.P.  He took an active part in the development of the business, and in later years extended his activities to wider shipping interests.
OTHER ACTIVITIES
In addition to becoming chairman of the Shipping Association (an organization to which he gave yeoman assistance in times of labour unrest), he also became a director of Kingston Wharves Ltd., a shipping combine created to bring about better efficiency and co-ordination in the handling of freight on the Kingston waterfront.
An active member of the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce and Merchants' Exchange, he gave valuable service to that organization, doing work in many committees set up to deal with various matters affecting the welfare and progress of the mercantile community.
His best service in this latter connection was, perhaps, his membership of the Agricultural Policy Committee, when, as nominee of the Chamber of Commerce, he was able to contribute the practical experience of a big produce dealer to the deliberation of that important committee.
A devout Catholic, a keen golfer, Mr. George extended his public duties to serve as Consul in Jamaica for Santo Domingo, and was awarded a high honour by that republic in recognition of his services to them.
Mr. George married the former Dolores duQuesnay, daughter of the late Phillip duQuesnay, who survives him. There are six children of the marriage, five daughters (one of whom is Mrs. Dorothy Stone, wife of Mr. Deryk H. Stone, solicitor of this city); and a son, David, who is also in the business of George and Branday.
Also surviving are his brother, Mr. Vin. George, a sister, Mrs. W.O. Vendryes, and other relatives.
His funeral leaves today from his residence, 15 Kingsway, St. Andrew, for Holy Cross Church, Half Way Tree, where funeral service will be conducted at 4:40 o'clock, followed by interment in the Roman Catholic cemetery, Brentford Road.
Flags flew at half-mast over various shipping offices in downtown Kingston yesterday as a mark of respect at the passing of this prominent shipping man, and today, in further tribute, the offices of George and Branday will be closed to the public.

Synopsis of the article on Percy George's funeral from The Daily Gleaner, April 28,1946:
Hundreds of people, in all walks of life, attended the funeral of Mr. Percy George yesterday.
Funeral rites were read at the home of the deceased by Frs. Eberly and Kiely, while His Lordship Bishop Emmet officiated at the Holy Cross Church, Halfway Treet, assisted by Frs. Wison, Cruchley, Heffernan, Scollen, Krim, Williams, Owen, Butler and Harraser.

The KING has been pleased to approve of: Mr.

Pallbearers at the church were Messrs. Jeffrey George (son- sic), W. Buie, Derek (sic) Stone, W. Vendryes, Dr. Branday.
