The Gleaner, Kingston, Jamaica - Wednesday, December 11, 1929:
PASSING OF MR. J.I. GADPAILLE
It is with a feeling of much regret that we announce this morning the death of Mr. Joseph Ivanhoe Gadpaille.  The sad event took place at his late residence No. 150 East Street yesterday.
The deceased was a well known figure in the community but in latter years he retired from public life owing to failing health.  Mr. Gadpaille was agent in Jamaica for the Manufacturers Life Insurance Company for several years and took not only an active part in business affairs but also figured in politics.  He was a member of the Old Mayor and Council where he rendered valuable services.  He also occupied the post of Vice Consul for France and during the late war he got up many entertainments in aid of the officers and crew of the French warships who visited this port.
Mr. Gadpaille was also a Justice of the Peace for Kingston and was identified with several local organizations.  He was a man of charming personality and although he was forced in retirement through failing health, he nevertheless took an interest in public affairs, and many of his friends who visited him during his period of convalescence were agreeably surprised to find how cheerful he was, despite his infirmary.
The deceased is survived by a number of relatives and to them the Gleaner tenders its sincere condolence.
The funeral will take place at 4:30 this afternoon.  A short service will be held at the Roman Catholic Cathedral after which the funeral cortege will move for the Catholic Cemetery in lower St. Andrew where the remains of the deceased will be interred.

October 26, 1881
Messrs. Desnoes' premises in Port Royal Street , the scene of the fire on Tuesday night, were closed about noon yesterday. A very large quantity of water had been thrown into the building, but the walls and floorings do not appear to have sustained much damage. The destruction of liquor, chiefly, we understand, in bottles prepared for the Christmas season, was, however, serious. Several rum puncheons exploded. On arriving down town many merchants occupying stores in the vicinity were loud in their complaints as to the failure to announce the fire from the Parish Church in the usual way.

THE FUNERAL OF MR. CHARLES A. MALABRE
Procession from late Residence of the deceased to Holy Trinity Cathedral - and to Cemetery.  Bishop O'Hare Officiates at Cathedral Service:  Representative Citizens attend.
The deep sonorous pals of the big Cathedral bell issuing forth in a dull, bleaky afternoon, with just a little sprinkle of rain, which, according o tradition is a blessing on the dead, indicated that the mortal remains of the late Mr. Charles Arnold Malabre, J.P. of the firm of Arnold Malabre and Company and Agent of the Leyland and Morrison Lines, were passing to their last resting place.
A good citizen had gone to rest and, in keeping with custom, the funeral rites were being performed in the presence of a representative gathering of citizens and friends, and the elements lent its graceful blessing, slightly, not to disturb the order or to make uncomfortable the profession, but just enough to mark its sympathy with the occasion.
The procession left the late residence of the deceased at 4:30 P.M. for Holy Trinity Cathedral headed by the Rev. Father Howle.  A buggy laden with flowers and wreaths followed the hearse and fully eighty vehicles joined in the procession.  At the Cathedral which was partly filled with people the corpse was met by His Lordship Bishop O'Hare, the Very Rev. Father Delaney, Father Francis Kelly, Father Cronin and Father Canning.  The Bishop officiated and at the close of the service the procession left for the Roman Catholic Cemetery where the body was committed to the grave by the Rev. Father Howle.
(Next follows a list of some of the people who attended).
The pall bearers were the three sons of the deceased, Dr. Herbert Malabre (brother), Major Simms and Mr. Chas. duQuesnay (sons-in-law)., and Mr. J. Narcisse.

Marie Desnoes (nee Malabre) is found in the Ellis Island Records sailing from Kingston, Jamaica on the S.S. On July 31, 1912, Isabelle Marie (age 52), her daughter Hilda Marie (age 22) and son Arnold B. (age 13), arrive at Ellis Island, New York  on board the S.S. The 1920 U.S. census for District 437, Bronx, New York, enumerated on January 4, 1920, shows Isabelle and her two sons Edmund and Arnold renting what seems to be an apartment (street name unreadable).  Isabelle is shown as Head, age 60, widow, she and her parents born West Indies, housewife.  Edmund is age 25, single, occupation: Salesman - Cotton Goods.  Arnold is age 21, single, occupation:  Telephone Co. In November 1, 1922, Marie is again arriving in New York on board the S.S. "Zacapa" (with her son Edmund who is shown on a different manifest for  US Citizens).  She is age 62 and going to Dr. A. Desnoes (this is her step-son Alfred Merino), 505 5th. Avenue, New York City, New York.  The manifest shows that she will be residing permanently in the U.S.

Again, Marie (age 63) is shown sailing from Havana, Cuba in May 8, 1924 to New York.  She possibly went to Cuba to visit her daughter Hilda who married a Cuban.  (Note that Hilda is shown on the same ship on the same date sailing to New York - but is not listed on the same manifest).  Her address in New York is her son - Mr. E.O. Desnoes (Edmund), 2502 Webb Avenue, New York City, New York.

The Gleaner:
October 26, 1881
Messrs. Desnoes' premises in Port Royal Street , the scene of the fire on Tuesday night, were closed about noon yesterday. A very large quantity of water had been thrown into the building, but the walls and floorings do not appear to have sustained much damage. The destruction of liquor, chiefly, we understand, in bottles prepared for the Christmas season, was, however, serious. Several rum puncheons exploded. On arriving down town many merchants occupying stores in the vicinity were loud in their complaints as to the failure to announce the fire from the Parish Church in the usual way.

Mr. J.W. Branday, who was severely injured by being thrown from a street car recently is, we are glad to say, progressing favourably. (The Gleaner, Tuesday, March 1, 1904)

On February 5th. 1909 The Gleaner reported that Mr. J.W. Branday of the firm of Messrs. George and Branday, "is very ill."
"Mr. Branday, it is said, was advised by his medical attendant to go to America, but this arrangement has had to be cancelled for the present.
It is to be hoped that Mr. Branday will have a speedy recovery."

From The Daily Gleaner, Saturday, September 4, 1909 - Page 1:
DEATH OF MR. J. BRANDAY
PASSED AWAY IN ENGLAND YESTERDAY MORNING - ILLNESS TERMINATED - HAD ANOTHER SEVERE ATTACK SINCE HIS DEPARTURE - SUCCESSFUL CAREER CLOSED.
A cablegram was received in Kingston yesterday announcing the death in England that morning of Mr. John William Branday of the firm of George and Branday.  The cable came from Messrs. Gillespie, Bros. and Coy., London, to Mr. P.S. Gamble, their agent in Kingston and he communicated the sad intelligence to the family of the deceased gentleman.
The news of Mr. Branday's demise was received with great regret in the city, especially in commercial circles where Mr. Branday was especially well know.  It is believed that he died at Sideup in Kent, where he was staying with his sister, Mrs. Anderson.
Mr. Branday left Jamaica on the 8th. of April last for the benefit of his health.  He had just passed through a serious illness, and it was thought that a trip to England would do him much good.  His health improved at first, and he derived great benefit from his stay in England during the first month.  But he took ill again and was in bed for the past six weeks.
In a letter dated August 11th., which he wrote to his partner (Mr. Arthur George) Mr. Branday stated that he had been very ill and he had just been able to go down to the garden for the first time in six weeks.  Therefore he would not be able to leave England on his return to Jamaica, on the 6th. of September as he had contemplated, but had deferred his departure until the 18th. if he was well enough.  But he did not make any permanent improvement since he wrote that letter, and he now lies dead in England, at the age of 53.
Mr. Branday was a son of the late Mr. L.P. Branday of Kingston and having decided to go in for commerce, he started as a clerk in the firm Davidson Colthirst and Coy.  Thirty years ago, he joined Mr. Arthur George in business, under the name of George and Branday.  The firm has continued up to the present day, and has a well established reputation all over the island for its integrity and stability.
Mr. Branday was a director of the Jamaica Mutual Life Assurance Society, and a member of the Council of the Merchants' Exchange.
The deceased gentleman leaves a widow and three daughters - one is at school in England, another was staying at Kent with him, and the third is now in Jamaica.
It is likely that the body will be brought out from England, for interment here.

The Gleaner - Friday, October 1, 1909:
LATE MR. BRANDAY
The Steamer Tampican is expected here about 3 p.m. tomorrow with the remains of the late Mr. J.W. Branday.
The funeral cortege will leave Messrs. Soutar and Co's wharf in Harbour Street at 4 p.m. on Sunday for the Catholic Church, and thence to the place of interment.

The Gleaner of Monday, October 4, 1909 reported that the body of the late John William Branday was brought to Jamaica on the Leyland Line Steamer "Tampican", from England on October 2, 1909.
