The business of Messrs. Arnold L. Malabre & Co. is one of the oldest in Kingston. It's historical connections date back to 1825, when the nucleus was formed under the style of William Titley & Co. - Mr. William Titley becoming in his day one of the most influential of the local merchants. In due time he was succeeded by his son William, who followed ably in his father's footsteps. Meanwhile a worthy Frenchman, Charles Malabre, had fled from his native city Bordeaux to the asylum which England afforded in those times of political unrest in France. His son, after a college education in England, became attached to the Jamaica business of William Titley & Co. in 1842, marrying soon after into a French family from Nantes that had settled in Jamaica. He rose by his ability and integrity so high in esteem of his employer that when the latter retired in 1856 the business became known as Arnold L Malabre & Co. - the designation which it has retained to present day, one which has always been synonymous commercial uprightness and capability wherever the firm's dealing have extended.

Mr. Malabre, seeing the greater possibilities general hardware and lumber in the local market, changed the entire character of the business, so that, instead of piles and bales of dry goods the firm's premises eventually stocked with general hardware and estates' supplies. After many years of successful trading he died in 1879, and was succeeded by his son, the late Mr. Charles Arnold Malabre, who continued the business in co-partnership with the late Mr. Bernard Hall, then Mayor of Liverpool.

Mr. Charles Arnold Malabre was educated at one England's most celebrated and exclusive colleges - Stonyhurst - where he had for classmates such famous men as Sir Conan Doyle, Bernard Patridge, Father Bernard Vaughan (the famous London preacher), Lord Petre and others. Mr. Malabre succeeded his father as Consul for thirty years, until he was compelled to relinquish it owing to the pressure of other affairs. Mr. Malabre was one of the most prominent and esteemed citizens, and after his death in 1922 the business was continued by his two sons, Arnold Louis and Herbert Clement and also by Mr. I. Louis Narcisse.

The firm suffered immense loss by a great fire and earthquake of 1907, which destroyed their extensive stores and stocks - probably the largest at the time in the West Indies. With characteristic enterprise and ability they, however, retrieved their misfortune, but so doing they altered considerably the character of their business, and, although still dealing in general hardware, they developed their activities very greatly as steamship agents, ship brokers, coal contractors and commission merchants, with correspondence practically all over the world. Their offices in South Street are attached to pier, 500 ft. in length and the large yard and warehouse area has been the scene of continuous shipping activity.

In October 1935, Mr. Nacisse took over the hardware section of the business, which he has since conducted under his own name, and Messrs. A. L. and H. C. Malabre have been continuing the steamship brokering and general commission activities of the firm. They are agents for Harrison Line, United States Lines, B. & N. Line, Com. Gen. Transatlantique, International Mercantile Marine Lines, New Zealand Shipping Company, Ltd., Italian Line, Anchor Line, Swedish American Lines, Japanese Mail Line (N.Y.K.). the Telegraphic address is "Malabre," Jamaica, and the codes used are Scott's 10th edition, A B C 4th and 5th editions, Bentley's complete phrase.

Malabre (Arnold Louis) 1827-1879, Officer of the Jamaica Militia, Said to have been "called out" during Negro Rebellion of 1865.

The Gleaner and Decordovas  Advertising, Kingston, Jamaica - October 19, 1865:
CAPTAIN MALABRE
We regret that in consequence of some little misunderstanding between Capt. Arnold Malabre and the authorities, he has been for the present, relieved of his command in the No. 2 Kingston Rifles.  We exceedingly regret this, for Captain Malabre is one of the most valuable Officers the Volunteer force possesses in Kingston, and his removal at this period, would most unquestionably be a dissatisfaction to the City.

The city owes much to Captain Malabre already, and there are few men who are more generally respected and esteemed for their amiable qualities and Mercantile experience than Mr. Malabre.  For our sake, we trust that matters may be explained satisfactory on both sides, and that speedily.

In December, 1868, he purchased a property in Kingston 17 - 150 Upper East Street, from Henry Hutchings.

Some thieves effected and entranced into the counting-house of Messrs. Arnold L. Malabre & Co. in Port Royal Street, on Saturday night or early on Sunday morning. It appears they first visited the yard premises of Messrs. DaCosta, Son & Co., where they carried off a Silver Spoon and a Silver Fork, the only property they could lay hold of, out of al Breakfast tray left there; and then pursued their search to the adjoining premises. They wrenched every lock they could lay hold of at Mr. Malabre's; helped themselves to some brandy, and carried away a cash pan with silver coin in it to the value of about 16s. The depredators entered apparently from South Street, in the rear of these stores, and were therefore quite secure form view of the Constables.

February 15, 1868 and March 25, 1870 (From the Gleaner, Kingston, Jamaica), Arnold Louis Malabre is listed as one of the Auditors for Jamaica Mutual Life Assurance Society on Port Royal Street.

On September 25, 1875 Arnold Malabre is shown sailing to New York aboard the S.S. Atlas.  He is Age 48 and his occupation is shown as Merchant - as follows:

Yesterday the remains of our late respected fellow citizen, Mr. Arnold L. Malabre, of the firm of Arnold L. Dissolution of Partnership
In our advertising columns will be found the announcement of the termination of the partnership heretofore existing between William Malabre and L. P. Branday, and further that Mr. Branday joins Mr. Bernard Vincent Hall, and will trade under the firm of Arnold L. Malabre & Co.
Messrs. The Daily Gleaner, Kingston, Jamaica - Thursday, August 29, 1895
DEATH OF THE HON'BLE. W.M. MALABRE
By the death of the Hon. William Malabre, which occurred at his private residence on North Street, yesterday, shortly after noon, the city has lost one who had for nearly half a century occupied a prominent position in commercial circles.  The deceased gentleman was 62 years of age and a native of the colony.  He received his education in Liverpool, and returned to Jamaica when eighteen years of age.  He then entered the office of Messrs. Lucas Michaels & Co., where he remained until 1856 acquiring in the meantime those sound business habits which did so much to secure his success in after life.  Then he started in a moderate way a business in Harbour Street under the title of Farguson & Malabre.  Two years later the partnership was dissolved, and he became associated with Mr. Bernard Hall of Liverpool, father of Mr. Vincent Hall, whose death we reported to in our issue of yesterday's date.  Later on Mr. L.P. Branday, one of our most promising citizens, joined the firm which was known as Wm. Malabre & Co.  The business was conducted by the three partners until 1887, Mr. Hall always remaining in England, and the active local management devolving on Mr. L.P. Branday and Mr. Malabre.  Mr. A.L. Malabre died, Mr. Branday left the firm of Wm. Malabre & Co. to take charge of that business, leaving the subject of this notice in sole control here.  This was in 1887 and a year later, on the retirement of Mr. Ha.., Mr. Malabre took his son Mr. Wm. Titley Malabre, who we are sorry to state is himself in a critical state of health, into the firm.  The above is a brief history of the well known firm of which the deceased was the head and mainspring from 1858 to the present time.  As a commercial man of honesty and integrity Mr. Malabre stood high in the opinions of all who knew him, and his demise is sincerely mourned by the community in which he moved.
Of his public career we find no record until he entered the field as a candidate for the vacancy on the Common Council.  He was opposed by the late Ralph Nunes, and a sharp and severe contest resulted in the election of Mr. Malabre.  He continued as a member of the Common Council until the advent of Crown Government, and on his retirement took little part in political matters until a modicum of representative government was restored.  He was appointed a magistrate about thirty years ago during the time that Edward Jorden was Custos of Kingston and consequently ranked among the oldest city magistrates.  During the time of Crown Government his services were frequently sought by the Government and he was appointed on several Commissions and selected as a periodical visitor to public institutions.
At the establishment of the old volunteer forces before the rebellion he held a commission as Lieutenant under Capt. Astwood.  When the new regime was introduced he was induced to stand as a candidate of the first representation in the Legislative Council of Kingston and St. Andrew.  The Hon. Geo. Solomon and Mr. C.L. Campbell were also nominated and the contest was fought with vigor.  There was however an absence of personalities, and many of those objectionable features that have characterized more recent contests, his opponents on election day being in harmony with him on the day of his victory.  Mr. Malabre was declared elected by a large majority, and during his career in the Legislative Council he particularly represented the interests of the commercial community and took an active part in all the debates in which questions of trade and commerce were involved.  He was a strenuous opponent to the sale of the railway, and when he signed the private arrangement that was made before the dissolution he added the following foot note which is characteristic of his anxiety at all times to promote the welfare of Kingston, namely, "I have signed this on the understanding that the extensions will include a foreshore railway in Kingston and that the rights of the general public are protected in respect to the railway wharf."  That his wishes with respect to the foreshore railway had not been carried out is a matter always to be regretted by Kingstonians.  Ill health prevented his return to the Council and it was on his own suggestion that Col. Ward took his place.
He was a Roman Catholic and a liberal supporter of the church.  He leaves a widow, two sons, and a daughter to mourn loss.

Mr. L.P. Branday joins the honorable and old established firm of Arnold L. Malabre & Co., so long and favorably known among us, and we understand that Mr. Chas. Arnold Malabre will still continue to sign for the firm.
To Mr. Branday and the new firm we ender our heartiest good wishes.

The Gleaner, Saturday, May 2, 1902:
DEATH OF MR. L.P. BRANDAY.
AN OLD MERCHANT PASSES AWAY
We regret to announce the death of Mr. Louis Peter Branday, which occurred at his residence at 114, East Street, Kingston, on Thursday night, at the age of 67.
Mr. Branday was one of the oldest, most prominent and most respected members of the commercial community of Kingston, and his death is deeply regretted by a wide circle of relatives and friends.  He was born in Jamaica, his father having come here from Hayti during one of the revolutions which personally disturb that country.
Mr. Branday started his commercial career as a clerk in the employment of Helicas(?) White & Do, a firm of general merchants who formerly carried on business in Kingston.  He left them to become a partner with his brother-in-law, the late Mr. William Malabre & Co.  At that time he was also the private attorney of Mr. Malabre's partner, the late Mr. Bernard Hall, of Liverpool, who, as our commercial readers know, possessed very large and varied interests in Jamaica, Hayti, Colombia and elsewhere, as well as in the mother country.
On the death of his brother-in-law, Mr. Arnold Malabre, Mr. Branday became a partner with Mr. Bernard Hall in the well known firm of A.L. Malabre & Co. Mr. Hall died and was succeeded by his son, who also died.  Mr. Branday then bought out the interest of his relatives in the business and became the head of the firm.  Subsequently he took into partnership Mr. Charles Arnold Malabre, son of the late Mr. A.L. Malabre.
Mr. Branday's commercial career was as honourable as it was lengthy.  He was a strictly honourable and conscientious man, and his integrity was above reproach.  From first to last, he was held in the highest respect by businessmen in Jamaica and by the firms with which he did business abroad.  The implicit trust placed in his judgment and integrity by the late Mr. Bernard Hall was in itself one of the greatest possible testimonies to his worth.  On several occasions he left the island on special missions to look after Mr. Hall's affairs in Hayti, Colombia and Liverpool.
Mr. Branday did not take any permanent part in politics and public affairs.  One experience disgusted him with everything of that kind.  He was one of the first members of the City Council and was the vice-Chairman when Dr. Scot was Mayor.  Mr. W.B. Hannan, who at that time ran an evening paper in the city, charged him with supplying goods from his store to the Council in contravention of the law.  Mr. Branday prosecuted Mr. Hannan for libel, and a keenly contested law suit, which caused intense excitement as the time, resulted.  The jury in Kingston could not agree and there was a change of venue to Clarendon.  After a very long trial, it was established that a few small articles had been sold to the Council from Mr. Branday's store but without his knowledge, that law case cost Mr. Branday over £1,000.
The deceased gentleman was a prominent and respected member of the Roman Catholic body.  He married Miss Malabre, the sister of the late Messrs. William and Arnold Malabre.  He leaves ten children, the eldest of whom is Mr. J.W. Branday of the firm of George and Branday.  All are resident in Jamaica save one who is a doctor in Liverpool.
THE FUNERAL
The funeral took place at 4:30 p.m., and was attended by a large number of the relatives and friends of the deceased.  Among those present were Messrs. J.W. Branday, A. George, C.L. Vendryes, Wellesley Bourke, Charles DeMercado, E.A.H. Haggart, C.A. Malabre, R. O?to, G.C.H. Lewis, J.L. Ashenheim, S. Soutar, E.X. Lenn, A.H. Jolea(?), John McDonald, R. Gamble, George Douglas, J. Lyons, L.J. Preston, C.T. Barton, Alexander Berry, and many others.  The body was Churched(?) at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church by Fathers Nooneo(?), Collins, Moiry and Prendergast.  The service was fully choral.  The funeral procession then left for the Cemetery, where the body was interred.

On August 15, 1890, the Gleaner reported under the heading "The Mongoose Commission" - a Commission appointed by his Excellency the Governor to enquire into the destructive qualities of the Mongoose in the Island - Mr. Charles Malabre said that he lived in St. Andrew, and "like all my neighbours...the mongoose takes my poultry and fruits.  I have heard of their attacking young pigs and children.  I think they have increased.  All description of birds, particularly those that build on the ground, are far scarcer.  I think the loss by the mongoose must be very heavy throughout the whole island and the peasantry complain very much.  I think a reward should be offered for everyone killed.  The people will not do anything for themselves.  The ticks have increased of late years owing to the destruction of the lizards, ground birds and snakes by the mongoose."

DR. V.E. SORAPURE DIED LAST SUNDAY IN LONDON; KNOWN HERE
A cablegram was received here yesterday announcing the death in London of Dr. Victor Edgar Sorapure on Sunday last.
Dr. Sorapure was a Jamaican and came from a well known family of this colony - he was the eldest son of the late Mr. E.B. and Mrs. Emma Sorapure.  After completing his education in Jamaica he proceeded to the mother country where he studied medicine.  On returning to the island he practiced his profession and for some years he was attached to the Medical Service of the colony as a D.M.O. in one of the country parishes.  He subsequently left for England where he established a very successful practice on Wimpole Street, London.  Dr. Sorapure nevertheless took a keen interest in the affairs of the colony.  He recently paid a visit to Jamaica for the benefit of his health and returned to England a short time ago.  His health, however, did not improve, and death supervened.
Dr. Sorapure has many relatives and friends in Jamaica.

Notes for AGNES JESSIE SORAPURE:
The Gleaner - April 28, 1875:
Birth:
At 80 Hanover Street, on the 23rd inst., the wife of V. B. Sorapure of a daughter.

(Excerpt taken from The History of the Catholic Church in Jamaica.)
Agnes Jessie Sorapure, the third child of Mr. and Mrs. Victor Boileau Sorapure,  was born on 23 April 1875, on Hanover Street where the Kingston Technical School now stands - the site of Le Con's Chapel and the place where he died in 1808.  Agnes Jessie Sorapure entered the Franciscan Convent, Duke Street, Kingston, on the feast of St. Raphael, 24 October 1896, and it is recorded that it was at six o'clock in the evening.  Six months later, 25 April 1897, Agnes Sorapure received the habit and the name in religion of Sister Mary Humiliana.  Her first teaching assignment was one year at St. Aloysius Boys' School, and after profession she moved around the circuit:  St. Joseph's Girls' School; St. Catherine's, Spanish Town; a return to St. Joseph's; then St. Anne's, Holy Family, and finally the Immaculate Conception High School, where she was stationed when appointed to form the native congregation.

No one will deny that Mother Humiliana (which she was later appointed) devoted her energies during the best years of her life to the task of forming young Jamaican ladies into good religious.  But, like all pioneers, she came in for her share of criticism.  These fault-finders were content with mere words and would never lift a finger to help shape the congregation to the lofty ideals. Their chief criticism was that she admitted girls of the servant class into the community.  Under colonialism a distinct brand was placed on such a girl and marked her for life as a domestic servant of the plantocracy.  Mother Humiliana acknowledged she did admit this type of girl; but what her critics failed to realize was that she never intended that this class of girl should teach.  Her plan was that the congregation should have two types:  teaching sisters from the upper classes of society, and what she termed "House sisters" from the lower classes who were to devote their lives to the domestic work in the convent by cooking, washing, and general household work, leaving the teachers free to concentrate all their efforts on education.  In her memoirs, Mother Humiliana mentions seven such sisters who performed yeoman service for the congregation.

Extract from the Jamaican Gleaner:
September 29, 1875
It has been stated upon good authority that the Roman Catholics in this city have been, for some time, keeping up a Seminary for young ladies, into which girls are admitted without distinction of color. It is also said that many black girls have there been taught sewing, fancy work, shirt making, drawing, the piano forte and the French language.

On October 14, 1911, Sister Humiliana sailed from New York on the R.M.S. Atrato for Jamaica.

On September 24, 1928, the Feast of Our Lady of Mercy, Sister Humiliana visited the Sisters at the Convent of Mercy Alpha and told them "of the possible formation of a local congregation".  The first two recruits were Sisters Perpetua and Sister Maria of the Divine Heart.  Other young ladies were recruited from St. Joseph's Girls' School and Holy Trinity Cathedral's Sunday School.  Our Lady of Perpetual Help became the model of the group.  Bishop Dinand, in his letter to Rome requesting approbation, commented, "Besides striving for perfection, it will be the duty of the sisters to instruct the youth in schools, visit the sick in hospitals and to direct homes for women, especially working girls."  (Extract taken from "The Blue Sisters" - Daily Gleaner - September 5, 2004)
Note:  There were originally five young ladies recruited along with Srs. Perpetua and Maria to form the Franciscan Missionary Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help of Jamaica (Blue Nuns).  They were Misses Julia DeLeon, Rita DeSouza, Gertrude Narcisse, Ivy Bogle and Adina Hamilton)
