Jamaican Family Search Genealogy Research Library
Bath and Bristol having been very favourite residential places for West Indians, no doubt on account of the hot springs and climate, as well as their gaiety and fashion, many memorial tablets are to be found in their churches. In Bath Abbey I have copied forty-six, and there are probably some hidden away under the pews. Owing to the great number of tablets the authorities have restricted their size, and in consequence there are but few heraldic shields. They are mostly very tastefully designed and are invariably of white marble.
The Burial Register of Bath Abbey down to 1800 has been printed by the Harleian Society.
"G.M." refers to the "Gentleman's Magazine."
"B.C." refers to the "Bath Chronicle."

1809, Oct. 28. At Antigua, after a few days illness, and in his 23d year, Major George Gordon, of the 8th West India Regiment, nephew of Col. Gordon, and military secretary to the Earl of Harrington. His career was short but brilliant. He served in the Expedition to Zealand; was aide-de-camp to Gen. Anstruther in the memorable battle, of Vimiera; and commanded with great credit to himself, the 6th Regiment during the campaign in Spain, which corps was the last of the British Army that embarked at Corunna. An higher eulogium cannot be pronounced on Major Gordon than to say that he was patronized by great and good men, the late Sir John Moore and Gen. Anstruther, who honoured him with their friendship. He has left a disconsolate mother and sister to deplore his loss. (" G.M.," 1236.)

The above were evidently three sisters.
In St. Catharine's Cathedral is a slab with the following: "Here lies the body of James Hay Esq. one of the Judges of the Grand Court Aged 39 years who departed this life the 7th day of October 1735." He was Member of Assembly for St. Thomas in the Vale in 1731. (Roby, 34.) And on another is: "Here lyes interr'd ye body Of WILLIAM HAY of the Parish of Westmoreland in Jamaica who departed this life the 16th day of April A.D. 1717 aged thirty six years," (Archer, 91.) There was also a stone to Michael Hay esq. (Ibid., 95.)

A set of the six Jamaican views on the Beckford Estates, alluded to ante, p. 95, has recently passed into my possession. On a shield are William Beckford's
CREST. A heron's head erased, holding a fish in its beak.
ARMS. Per pale Gules and Azure, on a chevron Argent an eagle displayed between three martlets; impaling, Argent, three shields Gules [?HAY].

"Edward Clarke, born 1716, was an officer in the army. He married Elizabeth Guthrie, who was Widow of William Williams; and daughter of Philip Haughton of Jamaica. Hence he derived large estates in that island."

Sir Simon Clarke, seventh Baronet, married Anne, daughter and coheir of Philip Haughton, Esq., of Jamaica, who brought him a fortune of £100,000. (Cussans' "Herts," iii. 60.)
Edward Clarke of the parish of Trelawny in co. Cornwall, Jamaica, Esq. and planter, by his will dated 23 August 1773, then in London, devised his, plantation of Hyde of 5000 acres and 350 negroes to his younger grandson Edward, and that of Swanswick of 1000 acres and 220 negroes to his son George Hyde Clarke, father of Edward and named his brother George of Hyde in Cheshire, his son-in-law Samuel Williams Haughton, and his elder grandson George, first son of his said son, his daughter-in-law Helen, his sister Elizabeth Cock, and nephew Ballard Beckford, deceased. Lands in New York. Proved 8 October 1776 (P.C.C., 416, Bellas).
