Notes for Hugh James:
In his commentary on the tomb of one of Hugh's descendants, Mary Ann Jackson James, J. Lawrence Archer makes the following observations on the genealogy of the family of Hugh James:

"THE family of James, in Jamaica, derives from Robert James, who, in 1652, married Margaret Dalton, by whom he had, besides other sons, Hugh, born 1669, ob. 1758, who, by his second wife, Anne, daughter of the Rev. Gawen Noble, of Cockermouth, had a son William, who, by his wife, Jane Senhouse, was mother of Hugh (born 1750), who, by his second wife, Cargill, had a son, Hugo James, appointed Attorney-General of Jamaica, who married Aemilia, daughter of Samuel Jackson, Member of Council, &c., and had, with other issue, Hugh Rees James, C. B., Commission in the Punjab, &c."

While J. Lawrence Archer did a great work transcribing "Monumental Inscriptions"  the family genealogy he presents is suspect, so the information he gives on the ancestry of Hugh James should be verified.

The compiler of the "Jarrett family notes" written in 1856, although his identity is unknown to us now, says that am oil painting of Herbert Newton Jarrett is "in the dining room", and one of his son-in-law William Rhodes James is "in drawing room."  The family notes were probably written to the children of Richard Boucher James, as he identifies Herbert Jarrett James as 'grandfather,' and Rachel Allen James as 'great grandmother.'

The following is his summary of the will of Herbert Jarrett:

By his Last Will and Testament he commits his soul to the Almighty, and his body to his Executor to be by him interred in such a manner as to him or his discretion shall seem most suitable to his circumstances and mode of living in his life time.  To each of his daughters he gave as a marriage portion the sum of £6000 and to each on his death a legacy of increasing value and to his granddaughters a similar legacy but of one tenth the value.
To each of his 4 daughters he now gives freehold property which in case of accidents to them, might be useful as a place of residence.
To Sarah Newton Kerr he bequeaths Jarrett Hall and he also gives her his post chaise with 4 horses, also his -- -- and also a clear annuity of £140 for her separate use.
He charges his residuary estate with the annual payment of several sums of money for the maintenance or and education of his 7 grandchildren, £50 to six and £70 to his oldest grandchild until he attains the age of 17.
He directs his executor to pay his Negro Slave John Barton £10 every year during his life beside the estate's allowance and he further sets free forever two female slaves and three children and otherwise makes provision for them.
