This portrait was painted in Rome in 1779, when he and his wife were taking the fashionable 'Grand Tour' two years after their marriage in Jamaica.
The inscription is almost illegible, but reads in part:
In memory of
John Blagrove Esq.
of the island of Jamaica
of Gre----- in this County.
Died ---- aged 70 years.
