Jamaican Convicts in Australia

Abbreviations:

HPB= Hyde Park Barracks

TOL: a Ticket of Leave that was sometimes issued to a convict. They still had to finish their sentence. It just meant that they could work for themselves. The TOL had to petitioned from the governor and was often denied, especially as most masters did not want to lose a worker.

CP= Conditional Pardon meant that they were free of their sentence and could work for themselves, but were not free to leave the colony.

COF= Certificate of Freedom was very precious and meant that the convict was free to travel and could return home if he wanted. Many, of course, could not afford the fare, but at least they were free men.

List of Male convicts, by the ship Moffatt, Thomas Bolton Master; John Smith Surgeon Superintendent
Arrived from England 30th August 1836, transferred to Hyde Park Barracks, Sydney, Australia, 31st August 1836

(Unless otherwise noted, all the following convicts were Natives of Jamaica, black, single, protestant with black eyes, woolly black hair sometimes tinged with grey)

COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS

Comments:

Most of the convicts who were sentenced to transportation and assigned to Sydney, Australia, were placed in the Hyde Park Barracks.

Other instances of slaves being "transported for life" have been found in Colonial Office correspondence.

The contributor is a Jamaican, now resident in Australia.

Questions from the Contributor of this information:

It seems to be a possibility that these convicts had taken part in the 1831 Rebellion. If so, why were they not executed like the others?

Has any one seen a record of the names of those arrested for the rebellion, and are the names listed here included there?

They were transported to Australia about 4 years after being sentenced. What took place during those four years?
