MOUNT ZION, ST. JAMES
MARRIAGE - THE ORDER OF THE DAY!

On Wednesday the 17th ult., no fewer than nine marriages were celebrated in the Presbyterian Church at this station.  The spacious edifice was crowded with well-dressed persons of both sexes, who had come from far and near to witness and give their countenance to the interesting ceremony.  This is one, and perhaps not the least, of the beneficial results of the Rev. T. H. Taylor's Evangelistic labours at and around Mount Zion.  The parties referred to had been, like too many others, living in concubinage, for longer or shorter periods; but awakened to a sense of their sin and guilt, by Mr. Taylor's earnest and faithful addresses -- accompanied as these no doubt were by the influence of the Divine Spirit -- they resolved to abandon their indecent and disorderly mode of life, and at once adopted measures for being joined in lawful wedlock.  The Rev. Adam Thomson of Montego Bay presided on the occasion.  Four of the couples were then severally and in succession united in the holy bonds of matrimony by him, and five by the Rev. James Robertson.  The cheerful countenances of the newly-married husbands and wives betokened that they all felt they had that day done the thing that was right-- a feeling which could not be deepened and confirmed by the fervent prayers that were offered in their behalf and the good wishes by which they were greeted by their friends and acquaintances all around them.  It is much to be desired that the salutary and commendable example thus set, were followed by many others of a similar kind, elsewhere and indeed everywhere.  Irregular cohabitation and illicit intercourse are still, to an alarming extent, the sin of the land.  Marriage is an ordinance of God, intended and fitted to promote the best interests of mankind; and it never goes well with any community or with any country where this Divine institution is extensively, systematically, and unblushingly set at nought or violated.  "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled; but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge."  Hebrews 13:4.  Let those whom it may more immediately concern seriously ponder this inspired warning; and let all do what they can, in their respective neighbourhoods, to brand with disgrace and infamy what has always been, and continues to be, one of the prevailing and polluting vices in Jamaica -- as abhorrent to God as it is degrading, and detrimental to man.  "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." Proverbs 14:34
