Notes for Patrick Burke:

WILL: I Patrick Burke of Clarendon, planter, being in perfect health make this my last Will and Testament as followeth:

As to my worldly estate I will and positively order that my debts are paid. Item, a mulatto child slave named Peggy the property of Mrs Mary Fearon of Oakesse begotten on a Negro woman named Betty shall be freed by my Executors (if agreeable to the owner Mrs. Fearon) by paying for her freedom out of my Estate. I also will and ordain that my Execcutors will have her christened and brought up as such and give her schooling so as she may be capable of writing and reading in a sensible manner as also to work well at her needle. I will and desire that a free quadroon child christened John Burke begotten on one Mary Bayly a free mulatto woman of Spanish Town shall be well educated in the knowledge of the Christian religion reading writing arithmetic and then to put him to a trade such as my Executors shall judge most advantageous to his interest and then to endeavour to get him into business. I give and bequeath to the abovenamed John Burke two men slaves out of my estate exclusive of the expense of his education. I will and bequeath to the abovenamed mulatto child named Peggy one Negro wench slave out of my estate provided the abovenamed owner Mrs. Mary Fearon consents to have her freed. If any or both of the abovenamed children should happen to die without issue then and in such case, I will and order that their legacies should descend to my relatives in Ireland named James Connerly commonly called Jimmy Dolphin, Mary Stewart late Miller. I give and bequeath to my dear mother if living £50 sterling, if not living to desecnd to the abovenamed relations. I will and order that whatever remains of my estate after paying debts and the above legacies shall be equally divided between the abovenamed mulatto child (provided she is free) and the abovenamed quadroon child. I will and desire that my Executors shall sell my horses and wearing apparell to the best advantage and apply the value for the above uses.

I appoint Mr. Patrick Blake of St. John and Mr. James McCabe of Clarendon, planters, executors of this my Will and trustees and guardians for the abovenamed children.

To my children John Burke, Walter Burke, James Grant Burke, and Elizabeth Taylor Burke the land and appurtenances known as Toneys Hutt. The residuary estate to my brothers and sisters in Bardados.
