Notes for Patrick Burke:

In 1795 Manchioneal district and Betty's Hope property and Orange Hill estate were all in Portland. In 1817 to 1822 the Manchioneal district was in St. Thomas in the East. Later it reverted to Portland. Titchfield was the early name for lands in Port Antonio.

Patrick Burke appears in the Jamaica Almanacs as follows: (The Almanacs reflect ownership etc. for the prior year).

1817 Almanac, Patrick Burke owned property in Manchioneal Division of St. Thomas in the East with 16 slaves and 2 stock.

1819 Cornet in the Surrey Regiment of Horse Militia, Manchioneal Troop.

1821 Almanac Manchioneal Division, 12 slaves and 1 stock.

Patrick Burke of St. Thomas in the East, merchant.

I give and bequeath to Elizabeth Burke a black free woman all my wearing apparel household furniture utensils small stock and a house to hold unto the said Elizabeth Burke her heirs and assigns forever.

I give to her during her natural life 6 of my slaves names Charlotte Perkins and her 3 children and Ann Burke and her mulatto daughter Bess.

I give and bequeath to my 4 mulatto children Margaret Burke, Mary Burke, Rebecca Burke and Peter Burke who are all free, the above mentioned slaves left to Elizabeth Burke to be equally divided between them.

I give and bequeath to Elizabeth Burke and her 4 mulatto children mentioned above my house in Titchfield free school land. I also give them £140 to make them as comfortable as possible, to lay in provisions in the house for their joint use.

The remainder of my property is to be divided among my brother and sister John Burke of Ballmew (?) near Castleher in the county of Mayo in Ireland, and Mrs. Cecilia Carr of Castlebar in the County of Mayo in Ireland, to them and their heirs forever.

Executors: my brother JohnBurke, and my friends Thomas Blakely, Maurice Jones, and Thomas Jones.

WILL: I John Burke of the parish of St. Catherine in the Island of Jamaica Esquire being in an ill state of health and intending speedily on a voyage to England do make this my last will and Testament in manner following

Imprimis as to my paternal estate or any thing which I may derive in any manner from my ancestors by inheritance settlement will or other title or conveyance I make no manner of devise or disposition thereof being desirous the same should descend remain or be in the same manner to all intents and purposes as if I had never existed.

Item. as to all my estate of what nature or kind soever or wheresoever of my own earning purchase or acquisition my house authorises[?] lands and tenements in Spanish Town my Negroes and other slaves my ready money plate household furniture chariot horses debts due and oweing to me securitys for money whether in Jamaica or on the seas all my money and effects in Great Britain in the Bank of England or howsoever otherwise secured or due either in law or equity and also all such sums as I may have in the hands of Dennis Kelly Esquire or any other friend in Ireland or elsewhere being of my own acquisition or the product of any remittance or remittances at any time made from the island of Jamaica all these and every thing else I am any ways entitled to exclusive of my Paternal Estate aforesaid I give and devise and bequeath to the Honorable Dennis Kelly Esquire late Chief Justice of Jamaica but now of the kingdom of Ireland, John Burke of Sergeants Inn London Esquire, Thomas Kelly of the Middle Temple Esquire, Nicholas Bourke and Dennis Daly both of Jamaica Esquires, and the survivors and survivor of them and the heirs executors administrators and assigns of such survivors In Trust nevertheless and for the sole use and benefit and behoof of my beloved wife and kinswoman Marcella Burke alias Kelly her heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever and to and for no other use intent or purpose whatsoever and I give to my said Trustees or any or either of them by and with the assent of the said Marcella and to her solely full power and authority to sell convey limit or dispose of all or any part of my said estate in any manner and term which she shall think proper intending the absolute use property and ownership of the whole only for her not in the least doubting but that she will pay a religious and honourable regard to all my purposes with which she is thoroughly acquainted as far as her circumstances may admit especially those with respect to the education of her brothers.

Item. whereas my said beloved wife is now ready to embark with me for England and her life as well as mine liable to the dispensation of Providence I do therefore in case my said wife and kinswoman Marcella Burke alias Kelly should happen to die with me or before me or so soon after as not to be acquainted with the contents of this my will or to prove it or in any event that she may be prevented from enjoying or disposing of this my estate --- aforesaid given her in such case I will devise and bequeath in manner following that is to say in any of the cases last mentioned and not otherwise I Give unto Edmund Kelly now or late a student of Physick in Edinburgh £500 sterling and unto Thomas Kelley of the Middle Temple student of the Law £500 sterling. To Mr. James Kelly their brother £300 sterling, to Mrs. Elizabeth Ffrench alias Kelly wife of Gregory Ffrench of Aggard Esquire £500 sterling to be laid out on interest by my trustees aforesaid for her sole and separate use and the interest annually to be paid her without power or control of her said husband during her natural life and the principal after her decease to be to the use of her children in such shares and proportion as she shall by will or otherwise appoint so as if she have a child then liveing named Marcella she may have £100 sterling at least for her share. 200 guineas to be laid out in the purchase of a ring with one brilliant diamond stone to be presented to the said Dennis Kelly and which I entreat him to accept and wear as a small token of my gratitude to the best and kindest of friends. To my beloved old friend and kinsman the said John Burke of Sergeants Inn £200 sterling. To my worthy friend and kinsman the said Nicholas Bourke £100 sterling and £50 sterling to his eldest daughter. To my good friend the said Dennis Daly Esquire 100 pistoles. To my friend Mr. John Burke of Guanaboa 50 pistoles. To Miss Elizabeth Ann Bermingham daughter of my friend Gerald Bermingham deceased I leave a handsome chased gold watch and chain of the value of 30 guineas and I desire that my picture now in Spanish Town may be elegantly copied and such copy in a handsome gilt frame may be presented to my friend Robert Delap Esquire Provost Marshall General of this Island. All these devises and bequests given in the event aforesaid and not otherwise I make or charge upon my whole estate but particularly desire that the same may be immediately paid out of my bank stock and ready money and the rest and residue of my estate (if my wife shall die before me as aforesaid and not otherwise) subject to these charges I give devise and bequeath unto Thomas Burke Esquire Counsellor at Law in Ireland son of my late Uncle Richard Burke his heirs executors and assigns.

And Lastly I appoint my said wife the said Dennis Kelly John Burke of Sergeants Inn Thomas Kelly Nicholas Bourke and Dennis Daly my executrix and executor of this my Will.

FROM DEED BOOK: This Indenture made the 27th day of June, 1752, Between Thomas Waite of the parish of Saint James in the said island planter and Ann his wife of the one part and Patrick Burke of the same parish and island planter of the other part Witnesseth that the said Thomas Waite and Ann his wife for and in consideration of the sum of £125 of lawful money of the said island to them in hand paid by the said Patrick Burke...Hath given granted bargained sold assigned and set over and by these presents Doth give grant bargain sell assign transfer and sell over unto him the said Patrick Burke his heirs and assigns forever all these two pieces or parcels of land lying and being in the parish of Saint James aforesaid the one piece containing by estimation 100 acres be the same more or less butting and bounding North on Charles Samuels East on John Covny South on Samuel Ward West on Patrick Dunbar the other piece or parcel of land butting and bounding as a platt hereunto describes containing 10 acres in ---- together with all and singular houses outhouses woods water --- profits commoditys advantages hereditaments and appurtenances whatsosver thereon built or erected...to have and to hold.. unto him the said Patrick Burke....

I Patrick Burke....being of perfect mind and memory...ordain this my last will and Testament....I give and bequeath unto my brother John Burke of this island and to my two sisters Jane Burke and Mary Plunket the sum of £100 to each. I give and bequeath unto my nephews and nieces Agustin Burke, Patrick Burke, Patrick Plunket, Alice and Maria Burke the sum of £40 to each of my said nephews and nieces. I give and bequeath to each of my 2 nephews Patrick Burke and Patrick Plunket the sum of £20 Irish money every year till they and each of them is of the age of 21 years which sum I desire may be entirely laid out to their education. I give and bequeath to my friend Henry Cuniffe and his heirs and assigns for ever a piece of land near Marthabrae containing 20 acres being part of a greater piece of land patented by Jonathan Deverall. I give and bequeath unto John Dunbar George Dunbar Patrick Dunbar Ann Dunbar and Susanna Dunbar 100 acres of land to them and their heirs for ever, it is near Montego Bay butting and bounding north on land which I sold Thomas Burke South on the heirs of Richard Quarrell deceased and East on the Fiveteen thousand acre line and West on land now in my possession, the said 100 acres is to be divided by my executrix and executor or the survivor of them into 5 equal shares when John Dunbar comes to the age of 21 years and each of the 5 children to have 20 acres. The rest and residue of my estate real and personal I give and bequeath to my dear wife Elizabeth Burke and my dear nephew Thomas Burke during the life time of my said wife share and share alike and after the death of my said wife Elizabeth Burke I give and bequeath all my estate real and personal unto my two nephews Thomas Burke and Patrick Plunket or the survivors of them their heirs and assigns for ever.

I do hereby nominate and appoint my dear wife Elizabeth Burke and my dear nephew Thomas Burke executrix and executor of this my last Will and Testament.

WILL: ..being in perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God do make and ordain this my last Will and Testament.... I give and bequeath unto my dear father John Burke and my dear mother Jane Burke or the survivor £400 sterling and to my sister Allice Burke £600 sterling and to my sister Maria White £400 to my uncle Richard Burke £50 which legacies I desire may be remitted as soon as possible which can be well done by the sale of the run of land I now hold in St. James's. As it has been my misfortune to have a quadroon child laid to my charge I give and bequeath unto the said child named Jenny daughter of a mulatto woman named Peggy belonging to the estate of the Rt. Honorable Lord Viscount Mayo £60 currency to be laid out for a Negro girl in trust for the said child. The remainder of my real and personal estate I give and bequeath unto my two brothers Aug. William Burke of this island and Patrick Burke of the Kingdom of Ireland or the survivor of them their heirs and assigns for ever.

And I do hereby nominate and appoint my good friend Henry Cunniffe Esquire of the parish of Trelawny Mr. Thomas Burke of the parish of St. James and my brother Aug. William Burke of the parish of Kingston executors of this my last Will and Testament.
