FAMILIES: Baylis

(Contributed by Dorothy Kew)

Descendants of William Joseph Baylis

Generation No. 1

1. William Joseph Baylis was born Unknown, and died Bef. 1832. He married Caroline Medo Bold 16 April 1825 in Port Royal, Jamaica (Source: Jamaica. Registrar General, Port Royal, Jamaica Copy Registers, Bapt., marriage, burials, v. 1-2, 1725-1860, (Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1983), Folio 131.). She was born Unknown, and died Bef. 1886.

Notes for Caroline Medo Bold:

The naming pattern in the Baylis family is an interesting one. Not only is the Christian name "George" carried from one generation to the next, but Caroline Medo Bold's surname shows up in the fourth generation of this family, in the middle name of George Christopher Baylis's second daughter, Bertie.

In the Port Royal Copy Register I came across a marriage between Caroline Medo Baylis, spinster and one Charles Noak, in October 1832. There are problems with this entry. First of all, Caroline Medo Baylis could not have been a spinster, as her married name was Baylis. Secondly, so far I have been unable to find a burial record for William Joseph Baylis prior to 1832. (This marriage would be a bare two years after the birth of the child, George Augustus Baylis.) Some of the earlier records are missing in the Port Royal Copy Register. It is also possible that William Baylis died in another parish.

Caroline married three times. (So far I have not found a burial record for Charles Noak.) Her third marriage was to one John William Jones, a soldier, who in 1886 made a will, in which her refers to his "late wife, Caroline M. Jones", and bequeaths his property to the children of George Christopher Baylis. John Jones is most likely the John W. Jones who was a witness in 1851 to the marriage of Donald McDonald and Sarah Laetitia Huggins. Thus there is a connection between Jones and one or both of these persons, who also happen to be the parents of Elizabeth Huggins McDonald who married Caroline's grandson, George Christopher Baylis.

Marriage Notes for William Baylis and Caroline Bold:

"William Joseph Baylis, bachelor, and Caroline Medo Bold, spinster, a white couple, by license."

Marriage: 16 April 1825, Port Royal, Jamaica (Source: Jamaica. Registrar General, Port Royal, Jamaica Copy Registers, Bapt., marriage, burials, v. 1-2, 1725-1860, (Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1983), Folio 131.)

Child of William Baylis and Caroline Bold is:

+ 2 i. George Augustus Baylis, born Abt. 1830 in Port Royal, Jamaica; died Unknown.

Generation No. 2

2. George Augustus Baylis (William Joseph 1) was born Abt. 1830 in Port Royal, Jamaica, and died Unknown. He married Jane Liddle McWhinney 1 September 1850 in Port Royal, Jamaica (Source: Jamaica. Registrar General, Port Royal, Jamaica Copy Registers, Bapt., marriage, burials, v. 1-2, 1725-1860, (Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1983), Folio 238, # 5.), daughter of John McWhinney and Rosannah Fowle. She was born 6 November 1820 in Port Royal, Jamaica (Source: Jamaica. Registrar General, Port Royal, Jamaica Copy Registers, Bapt., marriage, burials, v. 1-2, 1725-1860, (Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1983), vol.1, fol. 94.), and died Unknown.

Notes for George Augustus Baylis:

George Augustus Baylis was the son of William Joseph Baylis and Caroline Medo Bold. He married Jane Liddle McWhinney (the marriage record refers to them as "gentleman" and "gentlewoman") some three months before the birth of their eldest child, Charles Augustus Baylis.

On the records for the baptisms of his two younger sons, George Augustus's occupation is given as "clerk in dockyard" and "clerk in Naval yard". It would appear that his youngest son, George Christopher, followed in his father's footsteps, as he too worked in the Naval Dockyard, as an Admiralty writer.

The Baylis family displays strong naming patterns in that the name "George" occurs in three generations. The middle name "Augustus" appears in two generations, and in the fourth generation, Bertie Baylis, daughter of George Christopher, was given the surname of her great-grandmother, Bold, as a middle name.

Children of George Baylis and Jane McWhinney are:

+ 5 iii. George Christopher Baylis, born 17 July 1853 in Port Royal, Jamaica; died Bef. 1907.

Generation No. 3

5. George Christopher Baylis (George Augustus 2, William Joseph 1) was born 17 July 1853 in Port Royal, Jamaica, and died Bef. 1907. He married Elizabeth Huggins McDonald 18 August 1875 in Kingston, Jamaica (Source: Jamaica. Registrar General, Jamaica Dissenter Marriages, (v. 16-18), 1860-1878, Folio 218, # 21.), daughter of Donald McDonald and Sarah Huggins. She was born Abt. 1852 in Port Royal, Jamaica, and died 15 April 1907 in 2 Laidlaw Street, Campbell Town, Kingston, Jamaica (Source: Jamaica. Registrar General, Kingston, Jamaica Death Registers, 1906-1908, (Salt Lake City: Filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1983-1995), Reg. # AA 8217, "Widow of George Christopher Baylis, Dockyard clerk.").

Notes for George Christopher Baylis:

George Christopher Baylis worked at the Port Royal Dockyard at approximately the same time that William Dey Smedmore worked there. According to J. Murray Auld & Co.'s_Jamaican Pocket Book, in which is incorporated their Sheet Almanack for 1878..._ G.C. Baylis is listed as Admiralty Writer for the Victualling Yard, Naval Yard, Port Royal.

The first four children of George and Elizabeth Baylis were born in Port Royal. The two youngest boys were born in Kingston. The first three children of William and Amanda Smedmore were born at Sime Street, in 1884, 1886, and 1887 respectively, before the family moved to Fisher's Row. Baylis's two younger sons, George Noel and John Alistair were both born at 119 Upper King Street, Kingston, in 1887 and 1889 respectively. On the birth record for Donald Baylis, George Christopher Baylis's occupation is listed as "Writer, Naval Yard, Port Royal". On the birth records of his two younger sons his occupation is listed as "Clerk, Naval Yard, Port Royal", so George continued to work in Port Royal, while living in Kingston.

For some time I wondered why George Baylis moved from Port Royal to Kingston, while continuing to work at the Dock Yard in Port Royal. I came across a will, the Last Will and Testament of one John William Jones, which sheds some light on the family's reasons for moving. In this will, John Jones, who was the third husband of Caroline Medo Bold, the wife of William Joseph Baylis, bequeathed his house at 119 King Street, with the land attached, to the children of George Christopher Baylis (grandson of Caroline) and his wife, Elizabeth Huggins McDonald. To George himself, Jones left the policies on his life which had belonged to Caroline, his late wife, as well as his pension money.

The following is the text of the will of John Jones:

From FHL # 1937928. Jamaica. Supreme Court. Wills, 1894-1903. Entered Lib: 4, Fol: 315

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF JOHN WILLIAM JONES

This is the last Will and Testament of me John William Jones of the City and Parish of Kingston in the County of Surry and Island of Jamaica, Gentleman. I give and bequeath to the lawful children of George Christopher Baylis and Elizabeth his wife the house no. 119 King Street Kingston and the furniture books and other articles contained therein also the piece of land no. 117 attached to the house. I give and bequeath to the said George Christopher Baylis the sums due to me out of two ...(?) Policies of my late wife Caroline M. Jones on my life Numbered respectively 208 and 244 in the Jamaica Mutual Life Assurance Society after deducting loans and interest together with such moneys as may be due to me at the time of my decease from my pension at the Army Pay Department Jamaica. I appoint my friends William Henry McGlashan and John Murray Executors and Trustees of this my will revoking all former wills by me at any time heretofore made and declare this to be my last Will and Testament. In Witness thereof I have hereunto set my hand this Twelfth day of August in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty Six.

[On the side of the page is this declaration: This is the last will and testament of John William Jones, late of the City and Parish of Kingston and this Island, gentleman, etc. etc., dated 22 May 1891 and signed by Richard Hitchins, J. P. and George C. Baylis. Witnessed at 119 Upper King Street.]

Notes for Elizabeth Huggins McDonald:

Elizabeth Huggins McDonald was born in 1852 in Port Royal, Jamaica, the daughter of Donald McDonald, a shoemaker of Port Royal ,and his wife Sarah Letitia Huggins, who later married Daniel Elias Brown after the death of her first husband. Elizabeth was therefore a step-sister to the 7 children of Daniel Elias Brown and Sarah Huggins McDonald.

Elizabeth married George Christopher Baylis, who was employed as an Admiralty Writer in the Victualling Yard at the Dockyard, Port Royal. Sarah L. Brown, sister of Amanda and Susan Saunders Brown, was a witness at their marriage.

Amanda Brown married William Dey Smedmore, who also worked as an Admiralty Writer at the Naval Yard. The Baylis family lived for a time in Port Royal, on the same street as the Smedmores, but they moved to Kingston, where their fifth child, George Noel, was born in 1887.

Notes for Una Claire Baylis:

Una Claire Baylis was the third child of George Christopher Baylis and his wife, Elizabeth Huggins Baylis, formerly McDonald. Her birth was registered by Maria Hitchins, 31 Harbour Street, who was present at the birth. Her father's occupation on the birth registration was given as "clerk".

Marriage Notes for Una Baylis and Clifford Thompson:

Una Claire Baylis, daughter of George and Elizabeth Baylis, married Clifford C. Thompson 14 February, 1917. The ceremony was performed by W. Graham and witnessed by Ivan L. Thompson and Sylvia Dey Smedmore, eldest daughter of William Dey Smedmore and his wife, Amanda, formerly Brown. Sylvia, a half-sister of Elizabeth Baylis, would have been 26 at the time, seven years younger than Una.

On the marriage record Clifford Thompson gave his occupation as "clerk" and his place of residence as Leith Villa, Half-Way Tree. Una gave her place of residence as 49 Beeston Street, Kingston. This was the Smedmore home. By this time William Dey Smedmore had died (in 1914). Victor Smedmore was fighting in the First World War, in France, with the Household Battalion. Alice Blanche Levy (formerly Da Costa) was living across the street, at 22 Beeston Street, with her children Michael, Essie, Leo, and Joseph. Joseph would sail later that year, on 28 August, 1917, from Port Antonio on the s.s. Catherine Cuneo, for New York City. Michael had been working in the Administrator General's office for nine years. By now he was probably engaged to marry his future wife, Maud Dey Smedmore.

Bertie was the second child of George Christopher Baylis and Elizabeth Huggins McDonald. She was born at 12 New Street, Port Royal and her father's occupation is given as "writer, Naval Yard." The birth record incorrectly gives Elizabeth McDonald Baylis's maiden name as "Huggins". This was her middle name, and was her mother's maiden name.

Bertie married Philippe Camille Vendryes, whose occupation is given on the marriage record as "printer", in 1896. On the marriage record she gives her age as 18, but she cannot have been much older than 16 at the time.
