14 Slaves:- Dublin, Julius, Henry, Harry, Venture, Pollidou, Juamina, Richmond, Ann Virgo, Chance, Sally, Bessy & Jane

Precis:

This inventory shows that as well as being a surveyor WV Clarke owned slaves and livestock. He seems to have had a reasonably well furnished house which included such items as a dinner service of Liverpool china, 4 basonstands [washbasins in the bedrooms], an eight day clock and an organ. His personal items included epaulettes, a sash, a sword and a sabre [he was in the militia], also a gold watch, chain and seal together with his surveying instruments. It can clearly be seen that by far the most valuable possession was the slaves and their emancipation shortly after [see compensation claim in inventory of his wife in 1836] must have contributed considerably to the further decline of the family’s wealth and his grandson’s decision to go to sea.
