Immigration 10 Feb 1840 Morning Journal

The Independent press contains the following:

Mr. Muter seems to have determined wisely, to establish those improvements in the cultivation of his numerous Estates, which are to be obtained by the introduction of skilful agriculturalists, and for this purpose, he has procured from Scotland, six first rate ploughmen and the like number of French peasants from the neighbourhood of Bordeaux; the latter are all single men - but the Scotch are all married men and are accompanied by their wives and children.

The most liberal arrangements have been made for the accommodation of these people on Mr. Muter's estate in Roseau Valley and if the men are temporate in their habits and possess that prudence which is characteristic of their country, we have no doubt of their ultimately establishing themselves advantageously in this colony.

The French peasants are located on two estates belonging to Mr. Muter situated on the Windward side of the island, but admirably adapted to plough cultivation.
