Miscellaneous:

Extract of a letter from Liverpool, March 23:

"Wednesday, about three o'clock, a most melancholy and affecting accident happened here: The Pelican privateer plying in the river, with a moderate breeze, and having on board about 90 persons, men and boys, besides a number of woman and children; suddenly sailed through the lee-ports, and sunk in about ten minutes. This dreadful accident is more easily conceived than described, and it is impossible, from the consternation of those who are saved, to come at particulars; but it is supposed upwards of 80 have lost their lives, and from 30 to 40 saved. Mr. Starkie, an officer in the Excise, immediately went from the pier-head with his boat, and was the means of saving 25; his humane exertions will ever be remembered with the warmest gratitude."
