THE FALMOUTH CHURCH ORGAN

On Sunday last we had the pleasure of hearing performances of W. H. ALARMING FIRE

At about half past 1 o'clock on Tuesday morning the inhabitants of Falmouth were aroused by the ringing of the Market Bell and the cry of Fire, and in a few moments hundreds of persons were at the scene of the conflagration.  The fire originated in the Tinsmith shop of Mr. Jacob Reuben, opposite the Liquor and Provision Store of Samuel Lazarus, Esquire, in Upper Parade Street of Falmouth, and when it was first discovered by Constable Whittingham the entire shop was engulfed in flames.  The roof was consumed, and fell in shortly after operations had been started to extinguish the flames.  Strenuous efforts were made to confine the flames to the burning building.  Fortunately there was but a gentle wind blowing from the South-west at the time, and great sparks were wafted to house tops at a distance, the flame spreading itself and rising higher every moment.  The adjoining house, lately occupied by Mr. Eubert Lopez, also took fire and sustained much damage, and the house of Mr. Jacob Allsop, at the corner of Tharpe and Upper Parade Streets took fire two or three times but the firemen succeeded in keeping the fire within bounds.  It was fully 3:30 a.m. before the fire was sufficiently subdued to quiet the alarm which it caused.  Among those prominent in their exertions at the firs were Messrs. A. Lindo, George DaCosta, Inspector Alexander, A. B. Dignum, L. J. Preston, Albert Nathan, Frederick Anderson, D. C. D'Souza, R. H. Walker, Alonzo Nathan, Phillip Delgado, A. S. Robey, Morris Lazarus, Eubert Lopez, F. C. Raittie, David Lindo, F. O. Abrahams, G. P. Delisser, James M. Young and many others.  Too much praise cannot be awarded to the women who turned out in large numbers and kept up a constant supply of water to the close of the fire.  At the meeting of the Firewardens, in connection with the mercantile community which was held at the Court House yesterday the sum of £50 was raised and distributed to upwards of 200 persons of the labouring class who assisted in extinguishing the fire.

It is our painful duty to announce the death of the late Proprietor and Editor of this Journal Jon Castello, Esquire, on Saturday 24th March, 1877, at his Residence, Bower Hill, in the Parish of Hanover, in the 76th year of his age.
Mr. Castello was a native of Demerara in Guiana, but spent many years of his early life in Barbados, at which place he had many relatives residing. Subsequently he found employment in Jamaica and settled in Hanover, with which he was intimately connected during the 47 remaining years of his life.  It was about the year 1836 that he purchased the Presses and Plant of the Falmouth Post newspaper from the late Mr. Thomas R. Vermont, and became Editor and Publisher. Having filled the offices of Churchwarden and Justice of the Peace for Trelawny, he was in 1853 elected Member of the House of Assembly for the Parish of Hanover.
With advancing years Mr. Costello finally left Falmouth and took up his permanent abode at his Mountain Residence, Bower Hill, Hanover, whence he continued to the very last to edit his paper.  He married a lady from Hanover, but they never had any children.  His funeral service at the Parish Church in Lucea was performed by the Revd. APPEAL TO THE PUBLIC

Finding that it has been the invariable practice, for some time past, for persons who are non-subscribers to obtain copies surreptiously or otherwise, without paying for it, we have thought it advisable to reduce the price of single copies of the Falmouth post from sixpence to three pence.  Our weekly and other expenses are heavy.  Surely a little consideration will shew that it is certainly unfair, and something worse, to enjoy the emanations of an Editor's brain (and God knows the work is laborious) without, in some way, compensating him for it.  We have determined at the end of the present half year, on reducing our terms of advertising, etc, ....
