THE ATHOLE UNION LODGE

On Wednesday at about noon the procession from the Lodge Room in Market Street began, headed by Brother Albert Nathan on a dashing charger as leading Marshal, followed by other masons, and the masonic leaders in the rear: S. S. O. Jacobs, M. Solomon, D. C. D'Souza, M. A. Nunes, Robert Nunes, and John C. Lewis. The Montego Bay Band played as they marched to the newly purchased premises at the corner of Trelawny and Market Streets, where the foundation stone was laid and speeches were delivered.

We cannot omit noticing the splendid Silver Trowel made by Mr. John R. Lion of this town for the laying of the foundation stone. Mr. Lion deserved great credit, for turning out, in the short space of time allotted to him, such an excellent piece of workmanship.

At 2:00 p.m. there was a Banquet in the Court House.

DISGRACEFUL AND DARING ROBBERY

Yesterday morning the inhabitants of this town were thrown into a state of consternation on learning that some fiend, in human form, had stolen the several pieces of coins which were placed in the foundation stone of the Athole Union Lodge on the previous day. The thief, no doubt, expecting a large booty as disappointed, as there could not have been more than ten or twelve shillings in money in the bottle which contained the Scroll. The Police is on the alert and we trust that the scoundrel will be apprehended, brought to justice, and severely punished.

THE PARISH OF WESTMORELAND

Coolie Immigrants:- The Ship Woodburn, commanded by Captain Hartwell, with Coolies under the medical care of Dr. West, arrived at Salt River after a passage of 86 days from Calcutta, and then proceeded to this port (Savanna-la-Mar) in order that the Immigrants might be located on several estates in the parish. Mr. Alexander, the Agent-General, and his Deputy, Mr. W. Garcia, were in attendance. The number of Coolies shipped by the Agent in India was 566 men, women and children; there were 62 deaths during the voyage, from natural causes, and 2 men leaped from the vessel and were drowned: therefore 502 were landed, all of them being in healthy condition, and young fine looking people. The Woodburn remained 8 days in port, and her surplus stores having been sold to Messrs. Leyden & Co., Mr. Decordova, and Mr. Zachary Jones, she sailed for New York. The Immigrants have been located on the following properties, viz:- Cornwall, Blackheath, Mesopotamia, Frome, Charlottenburgh, New Hope, Maismuir, Roaring River, Shrewsbury, Mount Eagle, Albany, Fontabelle, and Blue Castle. Dr. West has gone to Kingston.

Revenue service:- Mr. William Bodden, the Collector of Customs, has obtained leave of absence for 12 months; and Mr. Anthony J. Monroe, the Coast Guard, has been removed from the ports of Savanna-la-mar and Black River, for those of Falmouth, St. Ann's Bay and Ocho Rios, by order of the Government.

COOLIE IMMIGRATION

We have been favoured by the Agent-General of Immigration, with a Copy of the Annual Report of the Immigration Department for the past year, that is, from the 1st October 1872, to the 30th September 1873. It appears that during that time, four Vessels called the Sea Queen, Lincelles, Latona, and Stockbridge, left Calcutta with 1,562 Immigrants, viz: 907 men, 364 women, 144 boys, 70 girls, and 60 infants.

The following are the particulars set forth in Mr. Alexander's report : The coolies are fine, healthy immigrants, especially those by the "Stockbridge." The Coolies located in Clarendon became able to take care of themselves soon after arrival. On some estates in the district of Vere, Coolies are employed for every kind of work, in fact some estates may be said to be carried on entirely by indentured Indians.

During this season, the Coolies who arrived in 1863 completed their term of industrial residence. Only 2 ships arrived in that year, and these were from Madras. All these people have accepted the bounty, and have thus become permanent colonists.

Application have been received and forward to India for 1,000 Coolies for the coming season.

NARROW ESCAPE FROM DROWNING

On Saturday last, a laborer named Joseph Jarrett, belonging to cinnamon Hill Estate in St. James', with his two sons, left the Ship Dundee in a small canoe under sail for Little River. After leaving the Dundee the man Jarrett, who seemed to have been ignorant of his whereabouts, steered for the triangles and put out to sea. The sea at this time was very heavy and much disturbed, the waves being what is termed "mountains high" owing to the violence of the wind. The boat was driven far out to sea, was soon upset and the 3 persons precipitated therein, where they struggled for some time, for their lives. Fortunately, however, Mr. David Sutherland, a fisherman of this worn, who was out at the time fishing, and seeing the boat upset, accompanied by his assistants, Adam Sutherland and William Reid, hastened to the assistance of Jarrett and his two sons. They succeeded in clearing the reefs, and reached the boat, to which the unfortunate man and boys had clung, just in time to save their lives.

INTELLIGENCE FROM SAVANNA-LA-MAR

From our Correspondent

Destruction of property:- On the night of Friday 13th, a house at Bath Pen, the property of the late Mr. Hugh Blair, was destroyed by fire, and there is every reason to believe it was the work of an incendiary. The suspected party has left the parish.

The Weather: The weather is very dry and warm, but there have been a few showers. In passing along the coast from St. Elizabeth to Savanna-la-Mar, it is pleasant to look at Mount Edgecombe Pen, the property of Charles Vickers, Esq., a son of the respected Custos of Westmoreland. The extensive grounds are studded with fine trees, and the pastures are in excellent order. Such is the condition also of Ackendown Pen, the property of R. S. Thomas Esq. Culloden and the Bluefields hills look remarkably well with their large canefields and provision grounds. Lower down, Paradise has the appearance of being well prepared for the spring, by the indefatigable attorney, Mr. C. P. Bovil.

The Wesleyans: The Wesleyan soiree which is to take place on Wednesday the 1st April in Savanna-la-Mar will be presided over by the Honorable Benjamin Vickers, Custos of the parish, and the Reverend Messrs. Henry and Edward Clarke, Geddes, Randall, and Jeffrey, till take part in the proceedings.

Revenue Department: Mr. William Bodden, our Collector of Customs, is dangerously ill.

Shipping: The barque Point arrived at Black River on the 14th instant after a passage of 50 days from Deal. She arrived in Savanna-la-Mar on the 20th. The barque Albertine sailed on the 17th with a load of logwood, and the brig Alderton and the barque Armenia will sail in a few days. The Quito from Montego Bay arrived on the 19th, but did not stay.
