In the Normal Department provision is made for the maintenance and accommodation of thirty students, nine of which are supported by the Government. The object of the Institution is to train teachers for the Elementary Schools in Jamaica and its dependencies. The course of study pursued at this institution is adapted to this training. Great care is taken that the student becomes an efficient class teacher and lecturer, by daily practice in the schools of the Institution and the close criticism of his efforts. Students are admitted once a year, on recommendations from clergymen and ministers of recognized religious bodies, after an examination which is strictly competitive, without regard to the religious denomination of the candidate.

The training of teachers is thoroughly practical, and while it embraces all subjects in a general education, it employs the students daily in the duty of the school. The students are also employed daily in industrial occupations, principally in the construction of school apparatus, carpentry, book-binding and gardening. Candidates are admitted by the Managing Committee on application to the President. With his Excellency Sir. J.P. Grant we may avow our conviction that this institution will, from year to year be a growing power for good in this city, and in the country generally.
