There are 15,432 coolies in the colony, 5,717 of whom are under indenture, and located on 104 Sugar and Coffee plantations.

There are 11 Union Hospitals in active operation in the colony, for coolies located on estates. There is also a depot at Spanish Town, in which coolies who are incapable of working, and who have been relieved by the Governor from further service under indenture, are cared, until an opportunity offers for them to be sent back to their friends in India. These institutions are under Government control.
