Jacques-Louis Marchand, habitant of the one time prosperous French West Indian colony of Saint Domingue, married Elisabeth-Adelaide Grepain-Descotieres.
Jacques-Louis and his wife, Elisabeth-Adelaide, were proprietors of a "cafeterie" (coffee plantation) in the Parish of Plaisance et Pilate, as well as a "cotonnerie" (cotton plantation) at Grande Riviere de Gonaives; they also owned a house in the town of Gonaives.
These properties were all lost during the revolution that swept the ill-fated French colony in that closing decade of the eighteenth century, but many years later, in 1831 and 1832, Jacques-Louis Marchand's two sons, Victor and Jacques, received indemnity for that loss from the Saint Domingue Indemnity Commission. (For these awards, see Indemnity records below).
The Issue of Jacques-Louis Marchand, and his wife Elizabeth-Adelaide Grepain-Descotieres were
VICTOR-THERESE-MARIE Marchand.
JACQUES Marchand.
As the Saint Domingue Indemnity records place Victor first, we presume that he was the elder of the two. He was born at Gonaives, and married Elisabeth Rossignol Desdunes (or des Dunes), a native of l'Artibonite. The Marchand family emigrated to Jamaica on account of the revolution, probably sometime between 1793 and 1800, and they apparently settled in Kingston.
As we have said, Victor Marchand married Elisabeth Rossignol Desdunes. Elisabeth was the daughter of a wealthy habitant of Saint Domingue, Jacques-Louis Rossignol Des Dunes, proprietor of a sugar and cotton plantation at Riviere de l'Ester in the Parish of Gonaives, and owner of a house in the town of Saint Marc.
Jacques-Louis Rossignol Des Dunes also owned another property in the same Parish (Gonaives) which is simply described as "hatte" in the St. Domingue Indemnity records.
The heirs of Jacques-Louis Rossignol Des Dunes, including his daughter Elizabeth, wife of Marchand, were awarded indemnity for the loss of these properties by the Indemnity Commission in 1833. (See Awards below.) For other Saint Domingue awards in which Madame Marchand participated, see pages ___.
At Kingston, Jamaica, on January 12, 1822, Louis Jules Marchand, son of Victor-Therese-Marie Marchand and his wife Elisabeth Rossignol Des Dunes, Mrs. Marchand, married our great grand Aunt, Pauline Clementine Chevolleau younger daughter of Raymond Chevolleau, one time Major in the service of his Britannic Majesty and former habitant of Saint Domingue, and his wife Louise Marguerite de Gournay.
In this Act of Marriage Louis Jules Marchand is described as: "..le sieur Louis Jules Marchand, demeurant en cette ville, et paroisse de Kingston, natif du Mole St. Nicholas, dans l'isle de St. Domingue, fils majeur et legitime de Mr. Victor Marchand" etc.
Besides the groom and his parents, two other Marchands sign the register, "Em. Marchand" and "Alfred Marchand". We suggest that these two were also children of Victor Marchand, but we simply do not know. Jacques Marchand, the groom's uncle, evidently wasn't at the wedding for his signature doesn't appear on the register. But we know that he was alive, when his nephew married Mdlle. Chevolleau in 1822 for in 1831 and 1832 the St. Domingue Indemnity records list him as an heir with Victor, to his father's property.
Among those who signed the Marriage Register at the wedding of Henri Philippe D'Aquin and Louise Adele de Sainte Marie in 1834, we find a P. E. Marchand and a D.A. Marchand. Who were they?
