In 1762 a patent of 300 acres land in St. James was granted to H.N.J. About the year 1745 John Allen conveyed to H.N.J. 300 acres of land in Westmoreland.
JARRETT, EDWARD
In 1681, there is a deed of conveyance to him on record of 130 acres land in Clarendon from William Coxhead of Clarendon.
The family of Stephens from whom the Jarretts derive their estate of Camerton fled from France after the massacre of St. Bartholomew and settled in Scotland whence they migrated to the County of Somerset.
Herbert Newton Jarrett Esqre., married Rachael Allen of the Island of Jamaica, and was father of John Jarrett Esqre., High Sheriff of Hants married Sarah Reid of Jamaica, and had a son.
Herbert Newton Jarrett Esqre., married Anne daughter of James Stephens Esqre. of Hinton of the Green County Gloucester and of Camerton Court Somerset by his wife Elizabeth Paterson Wallen of Jamaica and grand daughter of Philip Stephens Esqre. of Camerton Court, son of the Rev. George Stephens Prebendary of Highworth Wilts. By this Lady Mr. Jarrett had issue.

JUAN DE BOLAS
Commander of 20 Spanish Slaves who surrendered and were made free in 1660. He was presented with a commission to resume his command in the English service.
In Feb. 1663, a proclamation was issued offering freedom and 30 acres of land to such of the Spanish rebellious slaves as would submit to the command of Juan de Bola their former Chief, but whom they met on the 1st of November, and engaged and destroyed.

In 1783 a private act was passed for vesting Three Mile River in Westmoreland in James Kerr freed from the uses of the settlements of Alexander Fotheringham Ogilvy Esqre., and Mary his wife, formerly Mary Kerr.
KERR, DAVID
(Grand father of the Hon. William Kerr present Custos of St. James) was commissioned as Lt. in St. James Regiment, 2nd. Aug. 1768. Afterwards Major-General 1805. The Lt. commission was signed by (Sir) Roger Hope Elletson who was in 1766, Lt gov. of Jamaica. This document is now in the possession of one of Mr. David Kerr's great grandsons who has very kindly supplied me with this information. Mr. David Kerr married Sarah Newton Jarrett, daughter of Herbert Newton Jarrett of Orange Valley, 1st, June 1782. This information is taken from an entry in a Kerr Family Bible.

He was married five times. His 3rd wife Elizabeth, only daughter of Sir Thomas Modyford Baronet and widow of Hon. Col. Samuel Barry, died S.T. 1694; aged 30 years. By his 5th wife Sir N. L. had a Daughter named Maria, who married in 1737 Simon Luttrell, created Baron Irnham, and in 1785, Earl of Carhampton. Swallow-field and Temple Hall were amongst the estates owned by Sir N. L. He presented a Brass Chandelier to the St. Andrew Parish Church in 1706. His 4th wife Susanna Temple was the widow of Samuel Bernard and had one son named Thomas Bernard of the Inner Temple.

M.A. St. James 1754, '55. He died K.P.C. 175,6; aged 47 years. He was Custos of St. James. He married Mary, daughter of George Brissett. Vide Reid.
Colonel James Lawrence was Custos Rotulorum of St. James' Parish. By his wife Mary daughter of Colonel Richard James of Hanover ( the first child born of English parents in Jamaica after its conquest) he the enormous family. Richard James Lawrence his eldest son married Mary 4th daughter of Thomas Hall of Kirkpatrick a member of the House of Assembly for the parish of Westmoreland in1752. He died in London Nov. 8th. 1830, aged 85 years. Mr. R. J. Lawrence had 5 sons viz:- (1 ) James; (2) George. (3 ) Charles, ( who had issue ( 1 ) G. H. Lawrence, (2) Rev. C. W. Lawrence, (3) Major General Lawrence); (4) Henry, (5) Frederick Augustus, Captain and Gentleman of the Chamber to King George IV, when regent.
His eldest son was the late (Sir) James Lawrence Knight of Malta, and Author of several works, one of which on the "Nobility of the British gentry is well known. George the 2nd son was the late proprietor of Cowesfield House near Salisbury.
LINEAGE:- Henry Lawrence President of the Council of State under Cromwell was of St. Ives in Huntingdonshire and came of an ancient family a long account of which is to be found in the Gentleman's Magazine (1815 1829) Sir Egerton Brydges edition of Milton and other works. He married Amy only daughter and heiress of Edward Peyton of Isleham. (Vide the extinct Baronetage.) Died in 1664. One of his daughters married an Earl of Barrymore while John--one it is believed of the 7 sons-- migrated to Barbados with John Bradshaw in view of the regicide and ultimately removed to Jamaica about 1675. His (J. L.'s) will is dated May l0th, 1690. By his wife Jane daughter of Collins and relict of Richard Dunn of Cabrete he had 3 sons of whom the eldest John married Susanna Petgrave and by her had 6 sons and 3 daughters. His 3rd son James Lawrence of Fairfield was the ancestor as already stated late (Sir) James Lawrence.
(1 ) The eldest daughter of John Lawrence and Susanna Petgrave was named Susanna. She married Lawrence of New England family, and had with other children Rachael who married Henry Gordon and was mother of Anne Gordon who by her husband Alexander Edgar (buried in Edinburgh in 1820) had enormous issue, and who it mentioned in the curious genealogical will of her Aunt the late Mrs. Catherine Franklin who died in London in l83l. (2) Rachael the 2nd daughter of John and Susanna Lawrence married Jeremiah Downer. (3) Mary the youngest daughter of John and Susanna Lawrence married Philip Anglin and had a daughter Elizabeth, who married in 1765 Robert Scarlett of Jamaica, and was mother of James S. Scarlett created Baron Abinger. This very extensive family of Lawrence is necessarily connected with numerous other families more or less well known and the record substantiating the descent of its various branches have been carefully preserved in Jamaica and elsewhere; but are now too voluminous a character to enlarge upon here. However a good account of them is to be found in Roby's part III. History of the parish of St James, who has however omitted several descendants. (Archer.)
The Hon. Mr. W. F. Lawrence, M.P. for Liverpool, Abercromby (who is a son of (2) Revd. C. W. Lawrence above mentioned by Lucia daughter of Sir S. Young Baronet b. 1841) is now (1896) resident at Cowesfield House Salisbury. He is now the proprietor of Fairfield in St. James and was lately in Jamaica, on a visit. He has subscribed to 3 copies of this book.

The family of Long, of Longville, Jamaica, Hampton Lodge Surrey, and originally from Wilts, is descended from John Longe of Netheravon in the latter count, who died in 1690. Samuel, the grand son of John, having subsequently participated in the conquest of Jamaica, by Penn and Venables, became a person of great consideration in this Island, where his great grand son Edward Long Esqre., filled the Office of Chief Justice of the Admiralty Court.
This family, so eminent and distinguished in the earlier history of Jamaica, gave to the Island, its chief historian, namely:- Edward Long, whose fourth son, Beeston Long, was father of first Lord Farnborough.
Charlotte 2nd, daughter of Edward Long, married1791, Sir George Pocock, F.R.S. M.P. who was created a Baronet in 1821, and had issue. Vide Peerage &c.
The celebrated "Samuel Long" was Secretary to the Commissioners appointed by Cromwell, for invading the West Indies in 1654. He was then only 17 years of age. He was also a Lieut. in Col. Doyley's Regiment to whom he was distantly related.
In 1654, Samuel Long was taken out of the House of Assembly by the Governor's Warrant, committed to Gaol, and there detained for sometime for "high and treasonable crimes," in "causing himself to be elected Speaker, after the Governor had dissolved the House, procuring a Law to be passed setting up a Treasury and himself the Treasurer, procuring himself to be elected Clerk of the Assembly, and had done his utmost to infuse his traitorous principles into the members, but they altogether disown and abhor his advice."

Having favoured the revolution of 1688, he was created a Baronet, 19, July 1689, being the first upon whom that title was conferred by William III. Sir Hender was twice married but dying without issue, he was, according to the limitation of his Patent of Baronetcy succeeded in his title by his elder brother, Sir John, who was knighted by Charles II.

Appointed Lt. Governor in 1756. The Public Buildings in Spanish Town commenced; and the Church enlarged and adorned. He again acted as Lt. Gov. in 1759, and had a narrow escape of his life in 1760, in suppressing the Tackey War. He married Catherine Maria, daughter of Samuel Long. His sister Elizabeth married Edward Manning.

John Moore first settled at Barbados, and removed to Jamaica, married Elizabeth, daughter of Col. Smart.
Samuel Moore a younger son, died leaving-
Henry Moore Lt. Governor of Jamaica, who was created a Baronet in 1764. He married Catherine Maria, eldest daughter of Samuel Long of Longville, Ja., and had issue, John Henry, and Susanna Jane. The title became extinct in 1780.

He married, firstly, in Clarendon, 1754, Eleanor Angelina widow of William Dawkins.

In England, Miller adds "it is generally believed that Morant Bay and Port Morant were named after this family, but the agreement in name is accidental, as the district from the White Horses to Morant Point was named "Hato de Morante" by the Spaniards. (Roby)

MORRIS, SARAH
In 1784, a private act was passed to authorize and enable Sarah Morris of Kingston, described as a free Quadroon woman to settle and dispose of her estate both real and personal in this Island by deed or will in such manner as she shall think proper in favor of her natural daughter Charlotte Stirling and her issue notwithstanding the Law of Disabilities, and to entitle the said Charlotte Stirling and her issue to the same rights and privileges with English subjects under certain restrictions. This is the same lady who bequeathed the residue of her estate to the poor of Kingston and St. Andrew in the year 1809. The amount invested is £2,150, and the interest is regularly every year at Christmas time distributed by the Mayor and Council of Kingston.
