As son of William Robert Spencer of St George Hanover Sq. esq. he matriculated from Magd. Hall Oxford 28 March 1817 a. 22; Bishop of Newfoundland 183943, of Jamaica 1843 until his death. (Foster.)

On a blue stone in the floor of the passage down the south aisle. A. pew on the right side somewhat overlaps the inscription :

Daughter and Heires. [heiress]

ARMS. .... a griffin segreant, a bordure engrailed Ermine, a crescent for a difference; impaling .... a chevron between three martlets [SOUTHCOTT]. There, are many other Stones to the Walkers.

James Walker was a Member of the Assembly of Nevis 16813, Speaker 1682, M. of the C. 1684, and that year leaving for England. Col. James Walker was Member of the Council of Jamaica 168690, and left in the latter year for England. These two may be identical, because many settlers of Nevis removed to Jamaica. Dorothy was a minor and single in 1659, the date of her father's will. A pedigree of Southcott is in Vivian's " Visitation of Devon," ii., 698.

He was second son of Benjamin Lyon of Jamaica by Eliz. Ann his wife (ante, 11, 381), and served as Agent for that Island.

Her father John Duntze, a merchant of Exeter and M.P., was created a Baronet in 1774. Edmund Pusey, their elder son, matriculated from Exeter College, Oxford, 20 June 1821, aged 18. (Foster.)

William Murray was M. for St. Andrew 1765 and Naval Officer of Customs, Kingston, 1766. Walter Murray was M. for St. James 1773 and George Murray for St. Elizabeth 1783, 1787, 1790. (Feurtado.)

She died on the 5th of march in the year 1825,

& was buried in a Vault

Under this Church.

He was son of Major Leonard Vassall (born in Jamaica 10 June 1678, died in Boston, Mass., 20 June 1737), and was born in Boston 23 Nov. 1715, dying at Battersea Rise 8 May 1800. Will dated 2 May 1794. (P.C.C., Adderley.) Charlotte was born 14 Apr. 1762.

There is also a tablet to John Gustavus Lemaistre, died 4 Nov. 1840. Elizabeth L. died 11 July 1857. Charlotte Vassall died 5 March 1825 (Gloucestershire "Notes and Queries," i., 92, 102)

There was also a tablet to Samuel Barrett, Esq. of Jamaica, who died 13 June 1824, but I did not find this. (Gloucestershire "Notes and Queries," i., 89).


ST. JAMES, CHELTENHAM.

IS INSCRIBED BY AN AFFECTIONATE DAUGHTER

TO THE MEMORY OF

WILLIAM DWARRIS, ESQUIRE,

OF GOLDEN GROVE, JAMAICA,

WHO DEPARTED THIS LIFE AT STANMORE, MIDDLESEX,

ON THE 4TH OF OCTR 1813, AGED 60.

ALSO OF

SARAH, HIS BELOVED WIFE,

WHO DIED AT CHELTENHAM, CO OF GLOUCESTER,

WHERE SHE HAD BEEN MANY YEARS RESIDENT, AND WAS

BURIED AT STANMORE,

ON THE 24TH OF NOVEMBER, 1846, AGED 86.

ALSO OF CAROLINE MATILDA, DAUGHTER OF THE ABOVE

DIED AT BATH ON THE 12TH OF APRIL, 1867, AGED 71.

Above are these arms: Argent, on a chevron Gules three roses between as many griffins' heads erased

1813, Oct. 4. At Stanmore, in his 61st year, William Dwarris, esq. of Southampton - str., Bloomsbury, and Golden-grove, St. George's. Island of Jamaica. ("G.M.," 505).

He was nephew and heir of the Hon. Fortunatus D'Warris, M.D. of Golden Grove, Member of Assembly for St. George's in 1754, who died 5 Feb. 1790, aged 63, M.I. in Kingston Church. (Archer, 85). Will (683, Loveday).

In his will dated 16 Feb. 1810 he names his wife Sarah, his son Fortunatus William Lilley D., refers to the will of his wife's father Lilley Smith, bequeaths £2,000 each to his children William Henry D., Sarah Elizabeth D., Caroline Matilda D., Edward John D., Fanny McKeand D. and Charles Augustus D., names his aunt Dwarris in Jamaica, and refers to the will of his late uncle D. (493, Heathfield).

Fortunatus the eldest son became a noted barrister. In 1823 he was instructed to inquire into the administration of criminal justice in the Windward and Leeward Islands, was knighted 2 May 1837, and died 20 May 1860, aged 73.

He joined the Navy in 1808, present at capture of Martinique and Guadaloupe, Lieut. 1817 and on half-pay up to 1847. (O'Byrne's "Naval Biographical Dictionary"

NEW CEMETERY, CHELTENHAM

The three following inscriptions are from Gloucestershire "Notes and Queries," iv., 306, 310. There are hundreds of monumental stones here, and it is difficult to find any particular ones.

Sacred to the memory of FRANCES, widow of JOHN BARR, Esquire, of Saint George's, Bermuda, and Trearne, Ayrshire. Born September 30th 1801. Died June 12th 1870.

In memory of GEORGIANA [second] daughter of Admiral Sir JOHN POO BERESFORD Baronet the beloved wife of REGINALD COURTENAY, D.D. Bishop of Kingston, Jamaica. She was born April 18, 1819, and departed this life September 7, 1870.

In memory of Sir CHARLES HENRY DARLING, K.C.B., who from the year 1847 to the year 1866 was Governor of the following colonies: St. Lucia, Cape of Good Hope, Newfoundland, Jamaica, and Victoria, Australia. He died at Cheltenham on the 25th January 1870, aged 60 years.

Sir Charles Henry Darling was eldest son of Henry Charles D., Lieut. Governor of Tobago in 1831, who died in 1845, by his wife, the eldest daughter of Charles Cameron, Governor of the Bahamas. He was born at Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, in 1809, and entered the 57th Foot as Ensign in 1825. From 1827-31 he served as Secretary to his uncle, Lieut.-General Ralph D., Governor of N.S. Wales, then, to Sir Lionel Smith in the W.I. 1833-6, and in Jamaica 1836-39. He retired from the Army in 1841 ; held various offices in Jamaica 1843-7, and in 1847 was

Lieut. Governor of St. Lucia. In 18514 he was Lieut. Governor of Cape Colony. Soon after he was nominated Governor of the Leeward Islands, but became Governor of Newfoundland. In 1857 he was Governor of Jamaica, was made a K. C. B. in 1862, and in 1863-6 was Governor of Victoria. He married first in 1835 the daughter of Alexander Dalzell of Buttalls, Barbados, who died 1837 (as above); second, in 1841, the first daughter of Joshua Billings Nurse, Minister of Council for that Island, who died 1848; and third, in 1851, Elizabeth Isabella Caroline, only daughter of Chr. Salter of West End House, Stoke Poges, Bucks, who died 10 Dec. 1900. Darling died at 7 Lansdown Crescent, Cheltenham, 25 Jan. 1870, aet. 60. ("D.N.B.")


CHRIST CHURCH, NEWGATE STREET, LONDON.

On the east wall south of chancel is a small tablet adorned with swags of fruit, a cherub, etc. At the top is a shield with these arms : Argent, on a chief Sable three lions' heads erased Or. The tinctures are now uncertain, but they are taken from a copy of the M.I. which appeared in the "G.M." for 1791, pt. 1, p. 508.
