MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTIONS IN ENGLAND RELATING TO JAMAICANS
The three following inscriptions are from tablets in the church of St. James, Hampstead Road, in the parish of St. Pancras, which was in former years a chapel of ease to St. James, Piccadilly.*
In the Vault of this Church are deposited the Remains of
John Munro Esq.
of Keppel Street Russell Square
Merchant in the City of London, and at
Kingston in Jamaica.
He died the 3rd day of January 1812
Aged 73 years.
He was a man of inflexible Probity and Honour
and of a most benevolent Heart.

in the 61st year of his age.
William Parke, younger son of William Parke of Whitbeck, Cumberland (1724-1804), went to Jamaica between 1760-1770, and became Lt.-Genl. of militia; mar. Eleanor Crosse, dau. of Sam. Baldwin Cross of Jamaica, and left issue: 1. William, who inherited his father's plantations; 2. Charles, b. 1791, who purchased Lower Henbury, Dorset, and died 21 May 1860, aged 68. [ED.]

In Black River Church is a tablet to the Rev. Thomas Warren, 33 years Rector; born 31 Jan. 1738, died 22 Feb. 1807, aged 69. Margaret, his wife, born 6 Aug. 1747, died 15 May 1807, aged 59. Erected by surviving son and 4 daus. She was Margaret Brodbelt, mar. 13 Jan. 1772. (Archer, p. 306.)

1840, Sept. 20. At Carlsbad, Germany, aged 60, Captain Frederick Lawrence, half-pay, 43d Regt. one of the gentlemen of her M. Privy Chamber, & youngest son of the late R. J. L. esq. of Fairfield, Jamaica. ("G.M.," 676.)
1815, Jan. 20. In Montague-place, Montague-sq. aged 66, Mary, wife of Richard James Lawrence, esq. of Fairfield, Jamaica. She was b. in Jamaica. the dau. of Thomas Hall esq. of Kirkpatrick, & Worcester (descended from a noble family in the Netherlands). Distinguished for her beauty, she was pourtrayed by West in two of his most admired pictures:* first as Una; & secondly, as Fidelia, in his Fidelia & Speranza; but the memory of her virtues will survive the works of the artist. Her husband & five sons regret her. She is interred in the chapel of St. John "Wood Mary-le-bone. ("G.M.," 184.)

*This was Catherine Bird (nee Birtles), third wife of William Smith of Jamaica, afterwards of Manchester and London, and one of the promoters of the Jamaica Railway Company.
**Eleanor Jane Thompson (born Carpenter), daughter of Thomas and Ann Carpenter (born Lovibond), who was great-grandson of Samuel Carpenter, Treasurer of Barbados, and afterwards of Philadelphia, U.S.A., the friend and companion of Penn. She was aunt to William Smith mentioned above.

1819, Jan. 5. Died at Kew, Surrey, aged 84, Mrs. Popham, a native of Waterford, Relict of Joseph Popham Esq. Consul at Tetuan, the father of Lieut.-Gen. Popham & Rear-Adm. Sir Home Popham, K.C.B. ("Limerick Gazette" in "Notes and Queries," ii. ser., V., 136.)
According to the "G.M.," p. 646, she died 22 Dec. 1818.
1820, Sept. 11. At Cheltenham, Admiral Sir Home Riggs Popham, K.C.B. He had but recently returned from his command on the Jamaica station, where he had lost his daughter and his health. (A long account of his services follows.)

He was born at Gibraltar (or Ireland) in 1702; accounts vary. By his will dated 18 July 1809, proved P.C.C. 23 Sept. 1820, he left all his property to his widow for her life, and at her death to their children equally. The personal estate was sworn under £18,000. (Ibid., 382.)
His portrait, painted by Brown, was engraved in stipple half length by Cardon.
I noted the following from a bookseller's catalogue: "Original Letter-Book of Admiral Sir Home Popham during his command on the Jamaican Station, most of the Letters bearing his Signature; small 4to, original, half binding, 1818-20."
William, the Admiral's eldest son, born April 1791, became a Capt. R.N. in 1819. Brunswick, a younger son, was also Capt. R.N. (O'Byrne's "Naval Biog. Dict.")
John Packenham, Capt. R.N., 4th son of Adml. the Hon. Sir Thomas Packenham, G.C.B., son of Lord Longford, born 18 Oct. 1790, mar. Aug. 1817 Caroline Emily, 3rd dau. of Sir Home Popham. (Burke's "Landed Gentry," 250, and "G.M. " for 3 Nov. 1817, p. 554.)
1818, Nov. 30. At Vera Cruz, Mr. Home Popham, son of Rear Admiral Sir Home Popham. ("G.M." 276.)
1833, Feb. 20. At Falmouth, aged 63, Capt. Joseph Lamb Popham, R.N. father of the present High Sheriff of Cornwall. He was a half-brother of the late Rear-Adm. Sir Home Popham, K.C.B. He was made a Lieut. 1794, Commander 1797, and posted 1800. He married July 17, 1801, Miss Wallis, of Trevarno, near Helston. ("G.M.," 284.)
1838, Feb. 22. At Ballynakill, William Popham, esq. only son of Edward Popham esq. of Lincoln's Inn, and nephew of the 1ate Gen. William Popham and Adm. 1841, Jan. Lately. At Florence, Strachan J. Popham, 2d son of the 1ate Adm. Sir Home Popham, to Jane, dau. of Col. A. Campbell, of Ardchattan, Argyleshire. ("G.M.," 312.)

who was descended from NICHOLAS BARHAM of Kent, sergeant at Law. VIDE WARBURTONS MIDX.) AND WHO DIED AT DUNCROFT HOUSE, IN THIS PARISH 1746 AET. 51 YEARS. ALSO OF ELIZABETH HIS WIFE, who died 1756 Aet. 55 years: she was the widow of JOHN FOSTER, ESQ whose ancestor CAPTn. THOMAS FOSTER, of Northumberland BEING CONCERNED IN THE CAPTURE OF JAMAICA, HAD LARGE GRANTS OF LAND ALLOTTED HIM IN THAT ISLAND: BY HER FIRST HUSBAND, SHE HAD ISSUE THOMAS, JOHN, WILLIAM, SAMUEL, and JOSEPH; also two daughters, MARGARET and SARAH: THOMAS was sometime M.P. FOR DORCHESTER. HE DIED WITHOUT ISSUE AND IS BURIED HERE. JOHN ALSO DIED WITHOUT ISSUE. WM. AND SAML. BOTH HAD ISSUE WHOSE FAMILIES STILL SURVIVE, MARGARET married COLIN CAMPBELL ESQr. whose son COLIN WAS COLONEL IN THE GUARDS, AND DYING WITHOUT ISSUE IS BURIED [HERE?] SARAH married WILLIAM MATHEW BURT ESQr. who was M.P. for GREAT MARLOW, AND SUBSEQUENTLY GOVR. GENL. OF THE LEEWARD ISLANDS WHERE HE DIED. TO JOSEPH THE YOUNGEST SON OF HIS WIFE, HENRY BARHAM, who dying without issue bequeathed his estate on condition of his taking the name of BARHAM. JOSh. MARRIED DOROTHY THE DAUGHTER OF JOHN VAUGHAN, ESQ. of Trecoon, Pembrokeshire; and in 2nd marriage, the Lady Hill, of Hardwick Hall, Shropshire; where they both lie buried.

1814, Aug. 19. At Southampton, Joanna, wife of Francis Love Beckford, esq. Their youngest son Henry died about six weeks before his mother. ("G.M.," 294.)
1838, Feb. 24. At Mitcham, Surrey, aged 74, Francis Love Beckford, esq. formerly of Southampton and of Basing-park Hampshire. He was the younger but only surviving son and heir of Francis Beckford, esq. (uncle to William Beckford esq. 1ate of Fonthill Abbey, as also to Peter first Lord Rivers, of the creation of 1802; and to Charles-Rose Lord Seaford) by his second wife Susannah, only dau. and heiress of Richard Love, esq. of Basing. His father died in 1768, and his mother in 1803. In 1788 he married Johanna, third dau. and coheiress of John Leigh, of Northcourt House in the Isle of Wight, esq. and widow of Richard Bennett Lloyd, of the footguards esq; and by that lady who died in 1814, he had issue six sons and one dau:
1. Francis Love Beckford, esq. 1ate of the Coldstream guards; 2. William Beckford, esq. of Hatch Co. Surrey, who married in 1822, Maria-Elizabeth, only dau. of the Rev. John Bramston Stane, of Forest-hall, in Essex; and has issue three daus.; 3. Capt. John Leigh Beckford, R.N. who married in 1829 Harriette, fourth dau. of George Ward, esq. of Northwood-ho. Isle of Wight; 4. Carleton, who died in 1829 unmarried; 5. the Rev. Charles Douglas Beckford, who m. in 1831 his cousin Charlotte-Maria, 2d dau. of John Middleton, esq. of Hildersham-house, co. Cam. and has issue; 6. Thomas Henry, who d. young. The dau. is Harriett, m. in 1816 to her cousin Andrew Arcedeckne, esq. of Glevering-hall, Suffolk, and has issue. (Ibid., 544.)
A. Arcedeckne (grandson of Andrew, Attorney Gen. of Jamaica) was b. Jan. 1780. His mother was Cath. 2d dau. and coheiress of John Leigh. (See Burke's "L.G.")

There is another tablet to him on the opposite wall, erected by his parishioners, by the inscription on which it appears that he had been previously 40 years Rector of St. Lawrence and St. John in Southampton.

In the catacombs under this church are several hundred vaults, with inscriptions cut on the stones, let into the walls along the passages.
