In Memory [sic]

LUCIUS CARY ESQR

late of Kingston Jamaica

and Formerly of St. George's

Bermuda, Obit 26th, August

1826 Aetat 43.

1826, Aug. 26. At Clifton, Lucius Cary, esq. of Jamaica.("G.M.," 284.)

In St. Catharine's Cathedral is a stone to Col. Theodore Cary, who died 26 June 1683, aet. 63. (Roby, 19.) In Vivian's "Visitations of Devon" (i., 152) he is not given, but his eldest brother Sir Henry was aged 7 in 1620, when the Visitation was held, and as Theodore was born later than 1620 his name was, of course, not entered. See ante, p. 59, for his marriage, 15 June 1676, with Dorothy Wale. "Theod." Cary, son of George Cary of Cockington, Devon, gent., of Queen's Coll.. Oxford, matric. 29 April 1642, aged 18, of Corpus Christi Coll. 20 May 1642 (Foster). This would give the year of his birth as about 1624. The age of 63 on the gravestone may easily have been noted in error for 60. The Registers of Cockington unfortunately only commence in 1628. Lucius was a favourite name in Viscount Falkland's family.

The Rev. Henry Francis Cary, son of William Cary, of "Gibraltar, West Indies " (sic), B.A. Christ Church, Oxford, Translator of Dante, etc., died 14 Aug. 1844, aged 72, and was buried in Westminster Abbey; he is stated by Col. Chester to have been born at Gibraltar 6 Dec. 1772. Of course, "Gibraltar, West Indies," was quite good enough for an Oxford man, when the geography of the West Indies was little thought of. Is there not, however, a Gibraltar in Jamaica, and was there a William Cary of that Island? The Rev. H. F. Cary, moreover, had a son William Lucius Cary.
