THE MORAVIANS

The Moravian church is in that branch of the Christian Church which calls itself the Protestant Church of the United Brethren or Unitas Fratrum.  It was commenced in Bohemia and Moravia 60 years before the Reformation.  In 1457 some of the followers of John Huss united together on scriptural principles of faith and practice, and adopted the name of Unitas Fratrum.  In the course of a few years they became organized as a Church, with Synodical and Episcopal government, Episcopal orders and a strict discipline.  In spite of fierce persecutions on the part of the Roman Catholic powers, this Church stood its ground in Bohemia and Moravia, rapidly increased in extent and influence, and embraced among its adherents a large proportion of the population and many of the noblest families of those countries.

In 1722 some of these Moravians migrated for conscience sake, and, finding a refuge in Saxony, on the estate of a pious and highly gifted nobleman, the young count Zinzendorf, founded a small settlement which they named "Herrnhut."  Gradually the church expanded and colonies or "settlements" were an established in all parts of Europe, and in the United States of America.  In Great Britain an Act of Parliament was passed in favour of the Moravians in 1749, recognizing them as a Protestant Episcopal church, and securing to them civil and religious privileges.

The "Unity" of the Church as a whole is divided into three Provinces at present, the German, the British, and the American.  The Moravian missions to the West Indies were commenced in the year 1731.

In 1754 the first Moravian Missionaries arrived in Jamaica, and began to preach the Gospel to the slaves on the Bogue and some of the sugar estates in the parish of St. Elizabeth.  At present the Moravians have 14 Stations, 17 Missionaries and above 12,000 souls (children included) under their care.

The training of teachers is thoroughly practical, and while it embraces all subjects in a general education, it employs the students daily in the duties of the school.  The students are also employed daily in industrial occupations, principally in the construction of the school apparatus, carpentry, bookbinding, and gardening.  Candidates are admitted by the Managing Committee on application to the President.  With his Excellency Sir J.
