While serving on the Conqueror, John took part in the Battle of Trafalgar on October 21, 1805. He received prize money for his participation in 1806 and 1807, according to a Certificate from the Naval Prize Office, dated December 17, 1839:

JOHN SIMMONS JNR.
He was killed while working as a farm laborer at a local sand quarry. He slipped under the cart and was decapitated and badly mutilated.
Within a year, his two sons and a daughter had also died.

In the name of God Amen. I Robert Simmons of the parish of Kingston in the county of Surry and Island of Jamaica planter being at present sick and weak in Body but of sound mind memory and understanding do make publish and declare this my last will and Testament in manner and form following (that is to say) I direct that all my just debts and funeral expenses be fully paid off and satisfied as soon as possible after my decease by my executors hereinafter named or such of them as shall take upon themselves or himself the burthen of the Execution of this my will
I give devise and bequeath to my reputed daughters Martha Simmons and Ann Simmons and my reputed son Thomas Simmons otherwise called Tom my farm called Mile and farm consisting of two parcels of land purchased by me from Mr William Collard together with all the stock that may be upon the said farm at the time of my decease to hold to the said farm and stock unto and to the use of my said reputed children Martha Simmons Ann Simmons and Thomas Simmons otherwise called Tom their heirs executors administrators and assigns as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants I also give devise and bequeath unto my said reputed children Martha Simmons Ann Simmons and Thomas Simmons otherwise called Tom my four Negroe Slaves named Harry Billy Brannock and Othello to hold to them the said Martha Simmons Ann Simmons and Thomas Simmons otherwise called Tom their heirs and assigns as Tenants in Common and not as joint Tenants.
I give and bequeath unto Emily Waters of the parish of Kingston a Free Black woman the sum of Fifty pounds current money of Jamaica to be applied for the use and benefit of the said Negroe man slave named Brannock.
I give and bequeath unto Mary Thomas formerly Mary Poole daughter of John Poole of the city of Bristol in the Kingdom of Great Britain cooper and to my nephews John Poole and Robert Poole Sons of the said John Poole of the city of Bristol cooper by Mary Poole formerly Mary Webb my half sister now deceased whatever money I now have in the English stock or Funds with what interest may be due thereon unto the said Mary Poole John Poole the Son and Robert Poole equally between them share and share alike.
I give and bequeath unto Sarah Collins of the parish of Kingston a free born woman who now lives with me as my housekeeper the sum of five hundred pounds current money of Jamaica as a reward for her attention and faithful services to me.
I give and bequeath to my friend James Mann of the said parish of Kingston gentleman the sum of One hundred pounds current money of Jamaica. I give and bequeath to my friend John Murray gentleman the like sum of one hundred pounds like current money.
I give and bequeath unto my God daughter Mary Mann daughter of the same James Mann the sum of Fifty pounds current money of Jamaica.
I give and bequeath unto my Godaughter Sarah Andrews daughter of Richard Fers of the parish of Kingston gentlewoman the like sum of Fifty pounds current money of Jamaica.
I give and bequeath unto my God Son Edward Andrews son of Thomas Andrews of the said parish of Kingston gentleman the sum of Seventy five pounds current money of Jamaica
it is my will and I do hereby direct that my said Executors or such of them that shall take upon themselves or himself the Burthen of the Execution of this my will do lay out and expend the sum of Two hundred pounds current money of Jamaica in the purchase of clothing for my slaves or of such of them as my acting Executors or Executor shall deem deserving thereof
as to all the rest residue and remainder of my Estate both real and personal whatsoever or wheresoever the same maybe I hereby order and direct that my said Executors or such of them as shall take upon themselves or himself the burthen of the Execution of this my will do sell and dispose thereof to the best advantage and for most money that can be had or gotten for the same and I do hereby authorize and empower my said Executors or such of them as shall take upon themselves of himself the Burthen of Execution of this my will to make Execute and deliver all such deeds and conveyances as shall and may be requisite and necessary to the purchaser or purchasers of my said Estate and as to the Money arising from the sale of my said Estate I do hereby give and bequeath the same after payment and satisfaction of the said several legacies given and bequeathed unto the said John Poole son of the said John Poole cooper and the said Robert Poole equally between them share and share alike and as the said Robert Poole is under age it is my will that his moiety of the residuum of my said Estate may be placed out at interest either in Great Britain or this Island upon good security for the use of the said Robert Poole by my said Executors or such of them as shall take upon themselves or himself the burthen of the Execution of this my will until the said Robert Poole shall attain the age of twenty one years and in the meantime it is my will that such interest or so much thereof as may be necessary be paid and applied for and towards the support maintenance and education of the said Robert Poole but in case of the decease of either of them the said John Poole the Son and Robert Poole I give and bequeath the whole of such residuum of my said Estate or the monies arising from the sale thereof unto the survivors of them the said John Poole the Son and Robert Poole his heirs executors administrators and assigns for ever
and lastly I do nominate constitute and appoint my Friends David Laing of the said Parish of Kingston ship carpenter William Mellor of the same place gentleman and Jeremiah Mais late of the same place but now of the Kingdom of Great Britain Executors of this my last will and Testament herby revoking all former and other wills by me at any time heretofore made and declaring these presents only to be and contain my last will and Testament.
In witness whereof I have to the first and second sides of this my will set my hand and to this third and last side set my hand and affixed my Seal this tenth day of May in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight.

I Robert Simmons within named do herby make publish and declare this as a Codicil to my last will and Testament within written (that is to say) I give and bequeath unto my two reputed natural daughters Martha Simmons and Ann Simmons all my household furniture plate horses chaise and their furniture and in lieu of the Negroes named Harry Brannock Billy and Othello within devised to my said daughters and to my natural son named Thomas Simmons which devise I do herby revoke I give devise and bequeath unto and amongst my said daughters Martha Simmons and Ann Simmons and my said son Thomas Simmons fourteen Negroes Male and Female slaves which I last purchased from Messrs Shaw Holt and Company and Messrs Aspinall and Hardy to hold the said fourteen slaves unto and among my said daughters and son their heirs and assigns as Tenants in common and not as joint Tenants
instead of David Laing within named and appointed out of the Executors of my will I hereby nominate and appoint my friend James Muir of the parish of Kingston merchant and Executor of my last will and Testament
I give and bequeath unto Madam Cadot Cazenure now living with me for her attention the sum of Two hundred and fifty pounds Currency and in case she is at present pregnant and should in due time bring forth a child I give and bequeath unto such child the sum of Five hundred pounds Current Money of Jamaica to be placed out at Interest upon good Security and the Interest applied towards the support of such child until the age of twelve years and then the principal to be paid to such Guardian as he or she shall receive
in place of Five hundred pounds within bequeathed to Sarah Collins I give and bequeath unto her the sum of Two hundred and fifty pounds Currency only having otherwise recompensed her I give and bequeath unto Amelia Waters the sum of Two hundred pounds Currency
I give and bequeath unto my friend and copartner Alexander Thomson as a token of my regard for him the sum of One hundred pounds Sterling
I also give and bequeath unto my said daughters Martha and Ann Simmons all my wearing apparel
instead of Fifty pounds within bequeathed unto Mary Muir I give and bequeath unto her One hundred pounds Currency
I give unto David Ferres gentleman in room of my revered friend John Murray One hundred pounds Currency
and in every other respect I do hereby ratify and confirm my said will except such part thereof as may be done away or altered by articles of apprenticeship entered into and executed between me and the said Alexander Thomson.
I witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 13th day of November in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and ninety nine.

This Will was proved in London with a Codicil on 2nd October 1804, before the Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury by the oath of Jeremiah Mais the surviving Executor named in the Will to whom administration was granted, power reserved of making the like grant to James Muir the Executor named in the said Codicil when he shall apply for the same.
