Melancholy Accident.
We learn by the Cornwall Chronicle of the 25th inst that a shocking accident happened at retirement in the Burnt Savanna District Saint Elizabeth's on Tuesday the 14th inst. An interesting young woman, 18 years of age, went into the kitchen and unfortunately her frock caught fire; she endeavoured with the aid of a little boy to tear away the burning part but the flames ascended so rapidly that their attempts were ineffectual; the unfortunate girl then ran through the house literally in a blaze of fire, shrieking for assistance, but by the time any could be afforded little of her clothing remained unconsumed.
Such applications as her family and the neighbours present could apply towards her relief were afforded and every possible attention paid her- she lingered in great agony until 3 o'clock on Thursday when death ended her sufferings - not withstanding the pain she endured, she was enabled to relate the manner by which her clothes took fire.
She was the daughter of the late Mr C Luton who was barbarously murdered by the Rebels near Vauxhall Estate in March 1833. A Coroner's Inquest was held on the body before C.L. Ramson Esq on the following day when a verdict of accidental death was recorded.

Deaths from being struck by lightning.

We perceive from the Northside papers that on Sunday last, while the Rev. Mr. Fidler was closing the morning service at Spring Garden Church, in the parish of Westmoreland, a flash of lightning struck dead a young woman names Margaret Marshal. As the church was crowded she sat outside on a bench, having her baby, a child of five months old and another between 2 and 3 years sitting alongside of her. She had taken them to be christened. The lightning cut the crown of her bonnet off and severely burned her neck, as likewise her gown and cut one of her boots. The eldest child was injured but not severely. The infant although on her mother's lap, received no injury but the bench on which she was sitting was shattered to pieces. Another sudden melancholy death also occurred at Argyle Pen, in the same parish on the same day. At about 2 o'clock Mrs Smith, the wife of Mr Thomas Smith, Civil Engineer, who was conversing with her husband, and in the act of washing her hands, was struck dead by the electric fluid. Thus leaving her husband and 3 young children in state of great bereavement.

Joseph Martin Brown sworn - lives at Pemberton Valley in Saint Mary: is married to Eleanor Brown; was married in the Baptist Chapel.
Mr. Mackinson (Attorney for defence) contended that this was not a valid marriage unless some record of it could be produced. On reference to the law, it was found, as the court afterwards told the Jury, that all marriages de facto were valid marriages in courts of law; and not withstanding the circumstances that their not being solemnly recorded might affect the descent of real property they could not be questioned in the court of law. The Attorney General in reference to this subject in his address told the Jury that the necessity for a record existed only in cases of de facto marriages where the parties had taken each other for husband and wife without previous ceremony and subsequently lived together. Such marriages ratified in presence of witnesses became valid - there proof was however necessary but when a solmen ceremony had been performed at first the law required no more.

Kingston Chronicle March 16 1837.
We sincerely congratulate Mr. Thomas Smith alias J V. Crosbie on his recognition in the land of his birth and the approaching probability of his restoration to the patrimony of which he was so cruelly deprived; But although we did what was in our power to assist him in the day of need, and gratuitously published his statements when he was denounced by others as an imposter, we shall claim no remuneration for doing our duty, and why our contemporary of the Despatch, who denounced him as an imposter, and threw obstacles in his way to prevent his returning to Ireland should now claim the reward we cannot guess. For we received several letters from Mrs Jane Brew complaining of Mr Shannon's shuffling and of the meddling of other interested characters in this city which she gave us authority to publish, but which in charity to the parties concerned, we did not do as Mr Smith was already on his way to Ireland. Surely those who endeavoured to thwart his claims have no right to the reward offered to those who helped to prove them!
