In the District Court on Monday, Miss Hannah Lindo, proprietress of the Commercial Hotel, was charged by Sergeant Boswell with keeping open her hotel, after eleven o'clock, and also with unlawfully and knowingly permitting disorderly conduct in the same hotel on the night of 9th of December last. Mr. E. F. Morais appeared for the defence. The latter charge was withdrawn and the former proceeded with. For the defence it was proved that on the night in question a large body of sailors entered the hotel, armed with marlin spikes, for the purpose of avenging an insult that one of their comrades had received the night before. Seeing that they meant mischief, Mr. Joseph Da Costa, the manager of the hotel, did his best to induce them to leave quietly and after some parley succeeded in getting them out quietly. It was also proved that the barmaid had instructions not to sell any more spirits for the night and that when Sergeant Boswell found the gate open it was only to give egress to the sailors who were upstairs. His Honor decided in favour of the defendant.

Isaac H. DeMercado
Yesterday the city was plunged into deep gloom by the announcement that MR. ISAAC H. DEMERCADO, the respected head in Jamaica of the firm of CHARLES LEVY & COMPANY, had suddenly, and without a moment's warning, been summoned to his eternal home. For months past the state of MR. DEMERCADO'S health had been a source of great uneasiness to his family, it being apparent to all who knew him that assiduous and unremitting attention to business was telling on his once vigorous constitution. It was hoped, however, that rest would restore him to at least comparative health, but those hopes, unfortunately, were doomed never to be realized. Yesterday morning he proceeded to his office as usual and having attended to some business and written a letter, left again with the intention of going home. Arriving at the corner of Church and Port Royal Streets,
God's finger touched him, and he slept
He was seen to fall back in his carriage and his hat fell from his head, and when friends rushed to him to render assistance, it was found that the pure, noble, manly spirit of ISAAC H. DEMERCADO had taken its flight, leaving but the casket which contained the jewel behind it. Tender hands endeavoured to restore consciousness, and medical aid responded to an immediate call, but in vain, for apoplexy had stilled the busy brain for ever.
At the age of 12, ISAAC H. DEMERCADO commenced life in the service of ABRAHAM LAZARUS, and remained in the same office, when subsequently DEPASS BROTHERS bought out the business, and wee succeeded by SAUL MOSS & COMPANY. That business eventually became merged in the firm of CHARLES LEVY & COMPANY, and about 25 years ago, MR. DEMERCADO'S sterling ability and integrity were justly recognized by his being admitted a partner in the firm. For many years he has held the responsible position of resident partner in Jamaica, managing the entire business, CHARLES LEVY, ESQ., having taken up his residence in England. Truly may it be said that the deceased was one of the brightest ornaments of the community in which he lived, for his name was the synonym of honor, integrity, benevolence and sympathy. Among the commercial community he was admired and respected by all, while the poor of every creed and colour found in him a sympathising friend, ever ready to turn a willing ear to a really deserving appeal for help. In religious matters connected with his co-religionists in this city, he ever took the deepest interest, and has been at the head of his congregation a great many times; but politics and public matters were distasteful to him, and he never could be induced to interfere in any way with them.
A devoted son and brother, it is not surprising that he developed into the tender, loving husband and father. Setting a noble example to his children, one of whom, CHARLES DEMERCADO, ESQ., has recently entered the mercantile community, and also to those around him. he leaves behind him a name of which his children may justly be proud, for it will ever be mentioned with love and respect by all Jamaican. To his bereaved wife and family we tender our deepest sympathy and condolence. Their loss, however, is his gain, for after a well-spent life,
Tired he sleeps, and life's poor play is o'er
