'Nagan', that is, Ulick 'of the Heads.' He made amount of dead men's skulls covered with earth, who were slain in a battle. [from Ware's Annals of Ireland, Anno 1544].

In his Articles of Marriage he was called Sir William Burke, Lord MacWilliam of Clanrickard.

As Captain and ruler of Connaught, he was seized in fee of the Lordship, County or Territory of Clanrickard, consisting of the 6 baronies of Laughrea, Dunhellin, Killarlan, Clare, Athenry, and Leitrim. [p. 59]. By Letters Patent dated 10th July, 1543, King Henry VIII created him Earl of Clanrickard and Baron of Dunkellin.
