Generation No. 1

1. William FitzAdelm14 de Burgo (Adelm13, William12, Robert11, Harlowen10, John9, Baldwin8, Baldwin7, Croise6, Rowland5, Charles Duke of4 Ingelheim, Charles the3 Great, "Charlemagne", Pepin2, Charles1 Martel) (Source: Burke Pedigrees, (1748), pp. 13-19; p. 125b.) died 1206 in Ireland (Source: Burke Pedigrees citing the ancient and curious vellum manuscript belonging to Dominick Browne Esq..). He married (2) Julian Doisnell (Source: (1) Burke Pedigrees citing Sir William Dugdale's Baronage of England, Tom. 1, p. 693., (2) Burke Pedigrees, (1748), pp. 19, 125b.), daughter of Robert Doisnel/ Doisnell.

Notes for William FitzAdelm de Burgo:

Ancestor of the Earls of Clanrichard. "I only have this Pedigree from Sir William Dugdale ---King of Arms in his Baronetage of England, Tom I page 25, and Sir Richard Cox, Lord Chancellor of Ireland, in his Hibernia Anglicana, Lib I page 31, but it is also in the Rolls-Office of Dublin, and was made by the order of the Earl of Strafford some time Lord Lieutenant of Ireland in King Charles I's reign. No notice therefore should be taken of some who in the Earl of Clanrichard's Pedigree place John Monoculus among his ancestors, being led into that gross mistake by reading in history that said John Monoculus and Serlo his brother accompanied William the Conqueror into England as I have observed before page 4, but it appears from what I marked above, from undoubted testimony, that John Monoculus was not the Earl of Clanrichard's ancestor, but a first cousin of Robert de Burgo Earl of Moreton in Normandy and of Cornwall in England, from whom the Earl of Clanrichard and all the Bourkes in Ireland do derive their descents, of which Robert and his descendants to the present Earl of Clanrichard." (Pages 7-8)

In 1172 he was sent by King Henry II with Hugh de Lacy to take the submission of Roderick O'Connor King of Connaught, as also that of the King of Meath at the River Shannon. He was commonly called the "Conqueror of Connaught", and obtained from the King a great part of that province. (Pages 13-18)

In 1189 he was made Sheriff of the County of Cumberland. (Page 18)

In a recap of families, the author heads the final section: "The Pedigree and Propagation of the chief families of deBurgos, or Burkes, diversely written, for in England they write Burghs, or Boroughs; in Munster, Bourkes the one Family viz. that of Drumheen writes Burgh; in the County of Galway, Burkes, in the County of Mayo Bourkes; in latin de Burgo, in French du Bourg."
