John Simmonds was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1785. He joined the British Navy in 1803 in Kingston as a Landsman and fought at the battle of Trafalgar. He eventually left the navy in 1828 and settled in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire and is mentioned in the 1841, 51 and 61 census; he died in 1868. I have enclosed a painting of him, painted in Mansfield market place shortly after he was awarded his Trafalgar medal in 1848, proudly wearing his medal.
